This is an update to an earlier story:

On June 15, 2016, at 1650 hrs, Simi Valley Police motor officer, Tom Carney, was riding his motorcycle south bound on Tapo Canyon Road at Los Angeles Ave. As he crossed through the intersection, a small pickup truck that was driving north bound made a left or u-turn directly into the path of the oncoming motorcycle. The Officer Carney collided with the truck and was thrown from his motorcycle. He sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital. He underwent several hours of surgery on Wednesday night and may have additional surgeries over the next few days/weeks to address his injuries..

Officer Carney's injuries included significant head injuries, multiple fractures, and internal injuries. The exact injuries he received will not be released.

The driver of the truck, Traci Hobbs, 43 yrs, from Simi Valley, was not injured during the collision. There were no citations or arrests and alcohol/drugs did not contribute to the collision. The initial press release incorrectly stated she was 53 years of age.

The Simi Valley Police Department requested the assistance of the California Highway Patrol with the investigation of the collision. Anyone who may have witnessed the collision is asked to contact the Moorpark CHP Office, (805) 553-0800.

Officer Carney has been working for the Simi Valley Police Department for 14 years after having served with the Prescott Valley, AZ, Police Department and the United States Marine Corps. He is assigned to the Department's Traffic Unit as a Traffic Enforcement / Motor Officer.

The Department is working to organize a blood drive to support Officer Carney's surgeries and need for blood. More information will be provided as details of the blood drive are finalized.
