Fire Damages Motel Room

On 6/8/16 at approximately 12:20 AM, The Rohnert Park Public Safety Dispatch Center received a general fire alarm call at The Motel 6, 6145 Commerce Blvd. At approximately 12:22 AM Dispatch was notified that there was heavy smoke coming out of room 234 and the mattress inside the room was on fire.

Guests at the hotel began to self-evacuate prior to Rohnert Park Police and Fire Units arrival. Several guests also used the motel’s fire extinguishers to help extinguish the fire. Upon the arrival of the patrol officers and fire engines, there was still heavy smoke coming from inside the room. Rohnert Park Patrol Officers confirmed room 234 had been evacuated and proceeded to evacuate the adjoining rooms.

Rohnert Park Fire personnel quickly extinguished the mattress and removed it from the room. Fire crews confirmed there was no fire extension to any other part of the Motel and the fire was contained to the mattress. The fire caused charring on the wall and the room suffered a considerable amount of smoke and heat damage.

All of the hotel guests were able to return to their rooms except for the guest in room 234.

While Fire and Patrol personnel were investigating the fire, Neeman Hammer a 30 year Utah resident, was contacted nearby at The Jack in the Box Restaurant. Mr. Hammer told fire personnel that a friend had rented room 234 for him and allowed him to occupy it. Mr. Hammer also said he had consumed an unknown amount of methamphetamine earlier in the day and also earlier in the night. At some point Mr. Hammer had fallen asleep while he was smoking a cigarette in bed. Mr. Hammer said he awoke to the mattress he was laying on engulfed in flames, and out of fear ran from the room to the parking lot.

Mr. Hammer was transported to the hospital for precautionary measures to be treated for smoke inhalation and being under the influence of a controlled substance. There is no estimated dollar loss at this time.
