Community

Announcing the 1st Annual Teen Citizens Police Academy starts July 12 to August 30, meeting on Tuesdays 4-7 p.m.

In our efforts to broaden our outreach to the community we’re offering a Teen Academy to community members between the ages of 14-19. Our goal is to facilitate a sharing of perspectives, answer questions about law enforcement practices, and provide the youth with informative lectures and exciting hands-on exercises. Graduates of the Academy will acquire a solid foundation of public safety information to share with others in the community.

The program is not intended to train the participants to be police officers, but rather it is designed for those interested in a deeper understanding of the various challenges and decisions that a Culver City Police Officer deals with on a daily basis.

Who can participate? The Teens Academy is being offered to those who live in and/or attend school in Culver City. We expect to fill a class of 20-30 participants. If space permits we may recruit teens from outside the area.

How long is the course and what do we learn? The Teen Academy will be held July 12th through August 30th, 2016 at the Culver City Police Department. All classes will meet on Tuesdays 4-7 p.m.

During the 8 weeks program, participants will learn about:

  • The criminal Justice System
  • Recruitment and Training of Police Officers
  • Tactical Options / Force Training
  • Traffic and Patrol Enforcement
  • Crime Scene Investigations and Forensics
  • Canine Program
  • Juvenile Law
  • Social Media / Internet Crime and Safety
  • Leadership and the Explorer program

How do we sign up? You can print and complete the attached application, and review the attached program outline. You can then either mail in or drop off your completed applications to the Culver City Police Department attention Lieutenant Sam Agaiby. You may also fax to (310 253-6217) or email to [email protected]. Applications must be received by June 23rd, 2016 for consideration. Call (310) 253-6258 if you have any questions.

Persons selected to participate will be notified by mail and/or phone at least two weeks prior to the beginning of classes. The selection process requires a limited background check due to security concerns and the sensitive nature of some of the material. All applications will be retained and considered for future classes.
