Crime Alert and Community Update Bulletin

When I mention “the unit block” of a street, this means the incident occurred at an address anywhere between 1 and 99 of the street.

Notable Cases

On Monday, 05-23-16 at 3:07 a.m., officers were dispatched to a residence on the 200 block of Vista Grande Avenue on a report of a verbal argument between two male subjects. The reporting party believed the argument was going to turn physical. Officer Fulmore saw a subject walking with a noticeably unsteady gait and told him to stop and take his hands out of his pocket. The subject, a 23-year old Daly City resident, said he wanted to go home and attempted to walk away. He was subsequently arrested for public intoxication and resisting/delaying a peace officer in the performance of his duties. The other two subjects, a 40-year old Foster City resident and a 26-year old San Francisco resident, were arrested for public intoxication.

On Monday, 05-23-16 at 7:14 a.m., officers were dispatched to the Home Depot on a report of a man with a knife. Dispatchers gave a description of the subject who had put the knife to a victim’s throat. Officers contacted a subject matching the description and ordered the subject to the ground. The victim, a 35-year old Belmont resident, said he had just arrived at Home Depot and opened his trunk when he noticed the subject saying something he couldn’t recall. The victim said the subject got behind him and said, “Hope you have something good” and saw the subject had a box cutter in his hand. The victim said the subject then brought the box cutter up against the left side of his throat. The victim realized the safety sheath on the razor portion of the knife was still on, so he backed away and was able to run into the entrance of the store. The subject, a 46-year old Lompoc resident, was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon and for attempted robbery.

On Tuesday, 05-24-16 at 11:47 a.m., Officer Aquila was working a pedestrian safety detail on Mission Street at Goethe Street and observed a subject on a motorcycle who failed to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. The officer asked the driver for his license, registration and insurance to his motorcycle, and the subject said his license was suspended and expired. The subject also said he recently purchased the motorcycle, and the paperwork was at his home. The dispatchers determined the motorcycle was stolen in San Francisco almost a year ago. When Officer Aquila asked the subject if he had anything illegal on him, the subject said he had a bag of “dope” in his pocket. The subject, a 47-year old Pacifica resident, was arrested for possession of a stolen vehicle, vehicle theft, driving with a suspended license and for possession of methamphetamine.

On Thursday, 05-26-16 at 4:07 a.m., officers were dispatched to the Hampton Inn on a report of a female subject associated with a black Jeep that was lingering in front of the lobby doors. The subject, a 40-year old Pacific Grove resident, was ultimately arrested for identity theft, credit card fraud, mail theft, receiving stolen property, possession of a controlled substance, presenting false identifying information to police officers, displaying false license plates, possession of a forged credit cards and driving with a suspended license. The subject had numerous pieces of mail and items that did not belong to her—all of which stemmed from her stealing mail from mailboxes.

On Friday, 05-27-16 at 1:30 p.m., two plain clothes officers contacted two male subjects who were loitering in front of the McDonald’s restaurant on Geneva Avenue. The officers smelled the strong odor of marijuana emanating from both subjects. One subject had an outstanding warrant and said it stemmed from a previous arrest for possession of a methamphetamine pipe. This encounter ultimately resulted in the arrest of one subject, a 21-year old San Francisco resident for conspiracy and possession of stolen property and the other subject, a 34-year old Daly City resident, for possession of marijuana for sales, conspiracy, possession of stolen property, possession of drug paraphernalia and for a misdemeanor warrant.

On Friday, 05-27-16 at 9:48 p.m., Officer Riney attempted to pull over a vehicle with three occupants near the Westlake Shopping Center, and the driver refused to yield. Unbeknownst to the officer, the subjects in the vehicle had stolen a large amount of merchandise from the Burlington Coat Factory a short time earlier. The driver of the vehicle led the officer on a pursuit, which ended with the suspect vehicle being involved in a minor injury collision. The driver and one passenger fled the scene. The other passenger, a 22-year old San Francisco resident, was arrested for resisting a police officer, grand theft and criminal conspiracy. The driver, a 19-year old San Francisco resident, was identified and later arrested on Monday at his work in San Francisco where, ironically, he works as a security guard for a retail mall. He was arrested for evading a police officer, hit and run, burglary, criminal conspiracy and committing a felony while on bail. The identity of the third suspect has not been established.

On Friday, 05-27-16 at 11:44 p.m., several officers were dispatched to the In N Out Burger restaurant on a report of approximately 10-15 subjects physical fighting. When officers arrived, they encountered six subjects. One subject, an 18-year old South San Francisco resident, fled on foot. Officer Wagnon attempted to detain that subject when the subject struck the officer on his nose with a closed fist. The subject was arrested for resisting arrest and for battery on a police officer. A complaint is requested for another subject, a 16-year old South San Francisco resident, for fighting in a public place, violation of his probation, an adult offense committed by a juvenile and for violating his curfew.

Scams/Other

Sweepstakes Fraud

A 77-year old Daly City resident reported she was the victim of fraud and theft after losing $550.00 in a scam. The victim said she regularly enters sweepstakes contests, and last week she received a call from a female claiming to be a clerk from the “Games & Commission Clearing House.” The victim said the caller told her she won first place in the sweepstakes, and the prize was $295,000. The caller told the victim in order to claim the prize, she would need to pay the luxury tax first, in the amount of $17,000 and she would also need to pay for the insurance for the prize which was $550.00. The caller put her “supervisor” on the phone who told the victim her prize would be personally delivered to her residence by two people after she wired the $550.00 insurance money to an address in Washington. The victim told the “supervisor” she was elderly and it was hard to come up with the money. The victim said she eventually went to CVS Pharmacy to get a money gram and sent it to the address as instructed. The following day, the victim received a call from someone else at the “Games & Commission Clearing House”, and the caller said she talked to her supervisor who reduced the luxury tax to $1,400.00 and that she could pay the tax using her credit card. The victim became suspicious and told the caller her credit card was closed. The victim said no one came to her house on Friday to present her the prize money.

If you have to pay anything towards something you “won”, please be suspicious. This most likely is a scam!!

Nextdoor.com

This is a free private social network for you, your neighbors and your community which allows you to talk to your neighbors on line. This, in turn, People use Nextdoor for many reasons: to quickly get the word out about crimes in the area, organize a Neighborhood Watch Group, track down a trustworthy babysitter, find referrals for businesses, looking for lost pets, finding new homes for unwanted items (furniture, bicycles, etc.), and many other reasons. It is very easy to sign up, and I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access to a neighborhood if they don’t actually live there. There is a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your email. Give it a try! www.nextdoor.com
