Police say ‘YES’ to summer safety
Los Altos Police will be issuing a new kind of ticket beginning in June. YES Tickets, short for Youth Exhibiting Safety, will be given to youth who Officers see displaying safe behaviors, such as wearing helmets while biking, walking bicycles through crosswalks and riding in bike lanes.
The idea was born from an initiative in the Department which encourages patrol teams to come up with creative ways to engage with residents while fulfilling a need in the community. Officers identified youth bicycle and pedestrian accidents as a problem they wanted to address and devised the YES Tickets as a reward for safe behaviors. The hope is that by positively acknowledging safe street choices, those behaviors will carry over into the next school year.
The overarching goal of the YES campaign is to reduce bicycle, pedestrian and traffic accidents while also encouraging young people to keep safety in mind while out in the community.
YES Tickets will be issued June 9 through August 16 and can be redeemed for a variety of prizes at participating businesses located throughout Los Altos. YES Tickets must be redeemed by September 1, 2016.
