PRESS RELEASE - SCAM/Fraud ALERT Reply with TIP
On Weds, May 18, 2016, at 8:00 AM, Corcoran officers contacted a female adult who wanted to report a telephone scam. The female reported the scammer had used a phone or internet App to show the caller had called from the Corcoran Police Departments phone. The female reported the caller claimed to be a representative from the Washington DC Crime Center advised her she needed to pay an unknown type of balance on her account or she would be arrested.
The female told officers when she asked the caller for information regarding the account and balance he would not provide any information. The scammer would only tell her if she did not agree to pay, a police officer would be on his way to arrest her. The female told the caller she knew it was a scam and hung up.
The Corcoran Police Department would like to remind citizens that police officers and representatives of the department do not call people and demand payment. If you believe you have been the victim of a scam or fraud please call the Corcoran Police Department at 559-992- 5151.
