Press Release- Body Worn Camera's

Police Officers responding to emergency calls in Westampton Township will now be able to video record the incident with department issued Panasonic Arbitrator body worn cameras. Westampton Police officers will be equipped with the body worn cameras effective Wednesday, June 1, 2016.

The Westampton Township Police Department's use of Body Worn Video Camera technology will provide value in enhancing officer safety, reduction of liability, assist with prosecution and case resolution, and further promote professionalism, integrity and transparency.

The Panasonic Arbitrator body worn camera is an ultra-durable on-officer camera designed to balance both simplicity and performance. The Panasonic camera, which will be worn on the front of the officers’ uniform at chest height on the outer most garment to record will provide our members with a core unibody design for easy deployment. A 130-degree wide-angle lens, multiple on-body mounting options, a full shift buffer, and the easy deployment provides a single button solution to recording digital evidence. The video will automatically upload to a secured server within the police departments headquarters where it can be accessed for review. To ensure integrity, an end-user cannot tamper with video files stored on the server or on the body worn camera itself. The cameras record a continuous 30-second loop, so when an officer activates the device while interacting with the public, images of what occurred immediately prior to the contact will be available.

Chief Joseph Otto believes that in the importance of accountability for all parties involved in a police encounter, and knowing in today’s society, everyone has a smart phone equipped with a video capable feature, however sometimes only a portion of an event is publicized. This technology will not only hold officer’s accountable for their conduct, but also ensure the facts of an event are recorded in its entirety. The cameras will pay a huge dividend in reducing litigation while increasing officer efficiency. The cameras will protect our agency from frivolous allegations, allow us to capture the events in real-time as they unfold and prevent expensive and time-consuming lawsuits.

The Westampton Township Police Department also has the in car video system that will be supplemental to the body worn cameras. Featured is Ptl. Gleason and Det.Chieffalo
