Crime Alert and Community Update Bulletin

When I mention “the unit block” of a street, this means the incident occurred at an address anywhere between 1 and 99 of the street.

Notable Cases

On Tuesday, 05-10-16 at 5:24 p.m., Officer Wong was dispatched to the Bank of America on Mission Street on a report of a female who pushed a customer outside the ATM. The reporting party said she walked up to the ATM and noticed a subject park her vehicle in a red zone and race towards the ATM. The reporting party told the subject she shouldn’t park in the red zone as it was illegal, and the subject told the reporting party to mind her own business. The reporting party said the female continued to argue with her and then pushed her in the shoulder with her hand. The subject, a 22-year old Daly City resident, admitted to pushing the reporting party because “…she was in my face, and I gotta do what I gotta do when someone is talking down to me in my face.” The reporting party declined to sign a citizen’s arrest form. As the officer spoke with the subject, he noticed the top of a knife clipped to the inside of her front right pocket of her jeans. The officer removed the knife and determined it was a switchblade. The subject said she kept it for protection. The officer cited the subject for carrying a switchblade on her person.

On Thursday, 05-12-16 at approximately 12:38 p.m., detectives stopped a vehicle at Geneva Avenue and Rio Verde Street. The vehicle was stolen from Hertz Rental car, and the subject, a 19-year old San Francisco resident, was arrested for being in possession of a stolen vehicle.

On Saturday, 05-14-16 at 5:26 p.m., Officer Ortega was on patrol near Junipero Serra Boulevard and Washington Street when he smelled a profound odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle in front of him. He initiated a traffic stop and saw the rear passenger fumbling in the back seat. The officer asked the driver and two passengers for their identification and asked where the marijuana was, and the driver said there was a bag under the passenger seat. The driver provided his driver's license, and the two passengers said they had no identification on them but gave their names and dates of birth. Dispatchers were unable to find any identification for the subject in the back seat. The officer asked the subjects to step out of the vehicle and whether they had any guns, knives or drugs, and the subjects said no. The driver consented to a search of the vehicle, and the officer found a Ziploc bag containing Xanax and the bag of marijuana. The rear seat passenger, a 17-year old Daly City resident, was ultimately identified, and he was arrested for being in possession of a controlled substance, obstructing/resisting arrest, giving false identification to a police officer and for an active no-bail misdemeanor warrant. The passenger in the front seat, a 19-year old Pacifica resident, was arrested for possession of a controlled substance for sales. The driver, an 18-year old Pacifica resident, was arrested for possession of marijuana.

On Sunday, 05-15-16, at 4:59 p.m., Officer Wong was dispatched to the Westlake Shopping Center on a report of a male subject trying to pick up his wallet from mall security. A good Samaritan turned in the wallet, and a subject became hostile and used vulgarities when he couldn’t provide any form of identification. The wallet contained identification (credit cards) belonging to other people. The 38-year old transient subject was arrested for possessing 19 documents of personal identification and for misappropriation of lost property.

Robberies

There were three robberies during the past week.

On Friday, 05-13-16 at 1:03 p.m., a 29-year old Daly City resident said he was walking east on Clarinada Avenue when three black males, approximately 25-30 year old, armed with guns and knives, approached him and threatened him to give them his money or they would kill him. The victim had been drinking and provided inconsistent statements, as well as waiting two hours to report the crime. The case is closed due to lack of investigative leads.

On Friday, 05-13-16 at 9:10 p.m., two people were the victims of a home invasion robbery by unknown suspects at a residence on the unit block of Westmont Drive. The victims (a 47--ear old female and a 45 year old male) said they were returning home from taking photos at Land’s End in San Francisco, and the victims said they were entering their home when a suspect stepped into the residence as the female was closing the door. The suspect grabbed a camera bag containing a Canon camera, lens, battery and iPhone off the shoulder of the female victim. The victim said she fell to the floor inside of the residence during the struggle, and the suspect fled in a dark colored older model four door sedan driven by another suspect. The victim described the suspect as a black male in his 20’s, 5’9”, average build, curly short hair, wearing a black zippered hoodie and dark colored jeans. The victims believe the suspect followed them home—even though they made two separate stops after leaving Land’s End. This investigation is continuing.

On Sunday, 05-15-16 at 11:45 p.m., a 56-year old resident said he was walking home from the bus stop and was on the 900 block of Hanover Street when he felt something metal pressed against the back of his head. The victim said he turned around and saw a black male holding a black semi-automatic handgun in his right hand which was pointed at him. The victim said the suspect said, “I’ll have your cell phone”. The victim said he knew his neighbor had video surveillance cameras in front of his house, so he began to walk across the street to get in the range of the cameras. The victim said the suspect then cocked the gun and was able to grab his cell phone. The victim said the suspect said, “I’ll have your bag” and tried to take the bag which was slung over his shoulder. The victim said the suspect then cocked the gun again 2-3 times and was able to get his bag, as well as his glasses off his face, his headphones and his wallet. The suspect fled on foot, south on Hanover Street and west on Evergreen Avenue. The victim described the suspect as a black male, approximately 5’6”, thin build, wearing a black mask obscuring his face up to his eyes, a black Adidas hooded sweater, black sweatpants and black Nike basketball shoes. This investigation is continuing.

The Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP) of San Mateo, a nonprofit program administered by the state and federal governments to provide information and advocate for people who are or will be on Medicare, is holding a 4-part series on Medicare at the Serramonte Library Community Room (40 Wembley Drive) on the above dates from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The “New to Medicare” program offers an accurate and unbiased overview of Medicare, the federal health insurance system for United States citizens and documented permanent residents at least 65 years old or younger than 65 with disabilities. The presentation will introduce beneficiaries to facts about the program to help them make ideal choices for themselves when they are eligible, save them dollars and spare them from fraud. The information is particularly significant during this general enrollment period that began January 1 and ends March 31. Those who enroll within this period will become effective July 1 of the same year. Those who enroll in a later period will have to pay a monetary penalty. Attendees will gain a basic understanding of Medicare that will arm them against misleading advertising or inappropriate advice. Nextdoor.com

This is a free private social network for you, your neighbors and your community which allows you to talk to your neighbors on line. This, in turn, People use Nextdoor for many reasons: to quickly get the word out about crimes in the area, organize a Neighborhood Watch Group, track down a trustworthy babysitter, find referrals for businesses, looking for lost pets, finding new homes for unwanted items (furniture, bicycles, etc.), and many other reasons. It is very easy to sign up, and I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access to a neighborhood if they don’t actually live there. There is a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your email. Give it a try! www.nextdoor.com
