Millstadt Police Department D.A.R.E. Scholarship Winner
The Millstadt Police Department presented their 9th annual D.A.R.E. College Scholarship at the village board meeting on May 16th. The money for the $1000 scholarship is raised through the “D.A.R.E. to Run for BackStoppers” 5K/10K. The requirements for the scholarship include possessing at least a 3.0 GPA, submit three letters of reference, compose an essay on how good decision making can affect their future, and how volunteering and community service creates a better community. The candidate also had to graduate from MCS or St. James School. Jonathan Powles is this year’s winner of the scholarship. Jonathan is the son of Jerry Powles and Theresa Benassi-Powles. He is a 2012 graduate of Millstadt Consolidated School, and will graduate Belleville West this week. Jonathan has been involved in several clubs & activities at Belleville West and throughout the community including: Senior Class President, National Honor Society, St. Clair County Teen Court Peer Juror, St. Clair County Youth Leadership Council, Captain of the Swim Team, German Club, Debate Team, Lifesavers (a club warning students on the dangers of drugs & alcohol), and many other clubs and organizations. This fall Jonathan will be attending the School of Engineering at Vanderbilt University. Congratulations, Jonathan!
