Dangerous Felon Arrested, Charged with Multiple Crimes

APD arrested a man in east Anchorage yesterday after he was seen driving a stolen vehicle and then tried to elude authorities.

On Friday, May 6, 2016,  at about 3:30 PM, undercover officers spotted a stolen Honda Civic in the Spenard area; the vehicle was being driven by David Fatialofa, 35, of Anchorage.  Fatialofa is known to police and considered an officer safety risk.  Fatailofa also had a felony warrant for his arrest for vehicle theft.   Unmarked officers followed the stolen vehicle toward east Anchorage while awaiting backup.

At the time of the sighting, over one hundred officers from across the state were attending the Police Memorial Day ceremonies at the State Crime Lab on MLK Drive.  As the ceremony ended, officers who were following the stolen vehicle reported that they had been fired upon.  A large number of officers deployed from the ceremony in search of the Fatialofa who had abandoned the stolen vehicle on Russian Jack Drive, just north of Reka Dr.  A large perimeter was formed in an effort to contain Fatialofa, utilizing the unusually large number of officers available.  The Alaska State Trooper helicopter, Helo 3, was also used in the search.  Nearby elementary schools were notified of the potential threat and took security precautions.

A short time into the search for the suspect, officers observed a VW Passat, known to be associated with Fatialofa, enter and exit the perimeter. A traffic stop was conducted on the vehicle near the intersection of Debarr Rd. and Bragaw St.  Inside were two women, two toddlers, and Fatialofa who ran when the vehicle came to a stop.  Fatialofa darted in and out of traffic on Debarr Road before running south into the Golden Nugget Trailer Park on Hoyt St.  Fatialofa was flushed out of that area by officers and ran north toward the nearby Costco parking lot.  In the lot were two citizens who saw and heard the police activity and witnessed Fatialofa running directly toward them.  Both citizens grabbed Fatialofa while officers brought him to the ground and took him into custody at about 4:40 PM.  No persons were injured in the incident.

David Fatialofa was charged with vehicle theft, burglary, failure to stop at the direction of an officer and theft 2.  His bail was set at $22, 000.   Also charged was Raihana Hansen, 19, the driver of the Passat that gave Fatialofa a ride.  She was charged with Hindering Prosecution.  Her bail was set at $2500.  Both were remanded to the Anchorage Jail.

A relative was called to take custody of the small children found inside the Passat.  The Office of Childrens Services was notified of the incident.

APD would like to thank the actions of the two civilians who assisted in the apprehension of Fatialofa as well as the law enforcement from other agencies who supported the mission.

This case is still under investigation.
