IMPD Homicide Detectives investigating Criminal Homicide after victim succumbs to injuries

INDIANAPOLIS – Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) homicide detectives are investigating an incident that occurred on May 4th, 2016 as a Criminal Homicide after the victim died from injuries sustained in an altercation on the city’s far East side.

At 11:41 p.m., on May 4th, 2016, an IMPD officer was flagged down by a citizen at 21st and Shadeland Ave, who had a passenger who was suffering from at least one gunshot wound.  The victim was identified as 18-year-old, Oscar Gonzalez, who had been shot at least one time. Officers immediately requested EMS and began investigating the incident as an Aggravated Assault. EMS personnel responded and transported the victim to Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Officers were then dispatched to the Knights Inn hotel, located in the 7100 block of E 21st St, at 11:50p.m., in reference to a person shot at that location. When they arrived, they located another victim suffering from at least one gunshot wound, inside a hotel room. The victim at the Knights Inn was transported to Eskenazi Hospital in stable condition. Through witness statements it was revealed the altercation took place outside the hotel room, in the parking lot.

Aggravated assault and Homicide detectives responded to both locations and began gathering witness statements and canvassing the area for potential evidence. Detectives determined that both incidents were related and that the two gunshot victims had been involved in an altercation with one another in the parking lot of the Knights Inn hotel. The second victim’s information will not be released at this time.

The Marion County-Indianapolis Forensic Services Agency responded to both locations to process for possible forensic evidence. The Marion County Coroner will be assisting in the investigation, as to the exact cause and manner of death. Anyone with information regarding the above incident is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at (317)262-TIPS. Information given through Crime Stoppers is considered anonymous. This release may be updated as more information becomes available.
