Muskegon Public Safety Office Congratulates Liberty Bell Award Recipient Barbra Wenk

In conjunction with Law Day, the Muskegon County Bar Association sponsors the Liberty Bell Award which recognizes outstanding service performed by a citizen who has given time and energy to strengthen the effectiveness of the American system of justice and to improve, or solve, community needs.

The Muskegon Public Safety Office extends its congratulations to Barb Wenk for receiving this year’s award. She has fostered a positive force in the Nelson Neighborhood with her “Adopt-A-Lot” program. This program attacks blight in the rawest form and builds pride and caring in the neighborhood.

In addition to neighborhood and civic groups, this pilot project has also brought together Police/Building Inspections and Parole who have also adopted an orphan lot.

From the perspective of law enforcement this program serves not only to beautify the immediate area and remove blight but also addresses the “Broken Windows Theory” which basically states that by maintaining neighborhoods it creates an atmosphere of order and lawfulness thereby cutting down on criminal activity.

Congratulations to Barb Wenk on her award and we look forward to this program growing not only in the Nelson Neighborhood, but also being adopted by other neighborhoods throughout the city.
