Street Racing Suspected in Accident Resulting in Serious Injuries

On 4/27/16, at approximately 2:59 PM, the Chula Vista Police Department received numerous 911 calls reporting a serious traffic accident involving three cars and one city bus at the intersection of East H Street and Paseo Del Rey.

The preliminary investigation at the scene, including several witness statements, indicate this collision was caused when two vehicles which were engaged in street racing struck a slower uninvolved vehicle. That vehicle was forced over the center median into opposing lanes of traffic. One of the racing vehicles then struck a city bus that was stopped at a bus stop loading passengers.

Officers arrived on scene and discovered three people suffering from injuries requiring emergency transportation to various local area emergency rooms. One passenger on the bus received minor injuries. The driver of one of the vehicles racing, a 17-year-old male, was transported with minor injuries. The driver of the uninvolved vehicle was transported to the hospital with serious but not life threatening injuries.

The driver of the other racing vehicle, an 18-year-old male, was identified and released on scene.

Although there were no immediate arrests, both drivers were identified as suspects in a pending criminal investigation. The completed investigation will be forwarded to the District Attorney's Office.
