Crime Alert and Community Update Bulletin

When I mention “the unit block” of a street, this means the incident occurred at an address anywhere between 1 and 99 of the street.

Notable Cases

On Monday, 04-04-16 at 10:26 p.m., officers, along with the Daly City Fire Department, were dispatched to an apartment on the 200 block of Lake Merced Boulevard on a report of a “Hover Board” that combusted while being charged in the kitchen area. No injuries were sustained and the resident was able to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher prior to the fire department’s arrival.

On Wednesday, 04-06-16 at 5:19 p.m., Officer Greg Grogan stopped a vehicle on the 2900 block of Geneva Avenue and immediately smelled a strong odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle. He asked the driver to step out of the vehicle and noticed a black knife in the driver’s front pocket. Officer Grogan removed the knife from the subject’s pocket and realized it was more than 3” and spring loaded, which is illegal. The subject consented to being searched, and the officer found a large amount of marijuana in his vehicle, and also a large amount of money in the suspect’s possession. The subject, a 23-year old San Francisco resident, was arrested for possession of marijuana for sales and for possession of a switchblade on his person.

On Saturday, 04-09-16 at 2:53 a.m., Officer Zachary Fulmore saw a subject step out of a parked silver Camaro at the Valero Gas Station. The officer said as the door was open, he could see in clear view on the passenger side floorboard what appeared to be a black semi-automatic handgun. The officer asked the subject if was a real gun, and the subject said it was a BB gun. While examining the rest of the contents inside the vehicle, the officer saw a 36” long sword inside of a black sheath on the passenger seat. He also saw a wooden baseball bat behind the driver’s seat. The officer’s cover unit arrived, and the officers searched the subject’s vehicle, finding a 6” kitchen knife on the passenger seat, a 5” folding knife on the passenger seat and an 8” fixed blade knife jammed between the driver’s seat and center console. The officer asked the subject why he was carrying the pellet gun and additional knives, and the subject said he was in the process of moving. The subject, a 33-year old South San Francisco resident, was cited for openly displaying an imitation firearm in public.

On Saturday, 04-09-16 at 11:43 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 100 block of Rio Verde Street on a report of a female tampering with the witness’ exterior fuse box and taking mail out of mailboxes from residences along the same block. The witness gave a description of the subject, and officers found her in the area. The subject, a 32-year old San Francisco resident, was found to be in possession of a syringe loaded with heroin, a piece of paper containing methamphetamine and numerous pieces of mail not belonging to her. The subject was arrested for mail theft, petty theft, possession of methamphetamine, possession of heroin, possession of drug paraphernalia and for two outside agency misdemeanor warrants.

Scams/Other

Computer Virus Scam

On Friday, 04-08-16 a 65-year old Daly City resident was the victim of a “computer virus scam”. The victim said in the past few weeks, he had been receiving telephone calls from a number he didn’t recognize. He finally answered the call, and a male caller with an Indian accent said he was an employee of Microsoft’s tech support and asked the victim if his computer was on. When he told the caller the computer was off, the caller told the victim to turn it on. When the victim turned on his computer, he noticed that there were pop-up ads showing on his screen. The caller told the victim that other callers complained about similar problems, and it was due to the Zeus computer virus. The victim said the caller asked him for permission to remotely control his computer, and the victim consented. The victim said moments later, the cursor on his computer screen began to move, and a list of errors appeared on the screen. The subject told the victim that those errors were a result of the virus and that lifetime tech support could be provided for $599. The caller was able to convince the victim to purchase $700 worth of Apple iTunes gift cards and give the numbers on the back of the cards to him in order to remove the computer viruses. The victim thought perhaps it was a scam and reported this to us. Please do not fall prey to this type of call.

IRS Scam

It’s that time of year when the “IRS Scam” is in full force. We have been receiving calls from people advising they have received phone calls/messages from callers claiming to be from the IRS. The caller advises that the person has not paid the proper taxes and to avoid arrest, the person must pay immediately by purchasing a money card and giving the “agent” the codes on the cards. The IRS will NOT call you. If you know you owe taxes or think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040. If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes, please report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General at 1-800-366-4484. You may also report a phone scam at the Treasury department’s site, https://www.treasury.gov and click on “services” and then again on “report fraud, waste and abuse.”

Nextdoor.com

This is a free private social network for you, your neighbors and your community which allows you to talk to your neighbors on line. This, in turn, People use Nextdoor for many reasons: to quickly get the word out about crimes in the area, organize a Neighborhood Watch Group, track down a trustworthy babysitter, find referrals for businesses, looking for lost pets, finding new homes for unwanted items (furniture, bicycles, etc.), and many other reasons. It is very easy to sign up, and I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access to a neighborhood if they don’t actually live there. There is a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your email. Give it a try! www.nextdoor.com
