Scams/Other
“Grandpa/Grandma?” Scam
On Monday, 03-31-16, two elderly Daly City residents received a phone call from a subject who pretended to be their grandson, asking for $950 to bail him out of jail in the Dominican Republic. The victims purchased the moneygram that the caller asked to send, however they stopped payment when they grew suspicious. Please do NOT fall for this!! The suspect will be clever in the phone conversation and will be very convincing and persuasive. Thankfully these people did not lose their money.
Sweepstakes Scam
An 80-year old Daly City resident said she received a phone call on Tuesday, 03-22-16 at 11:00 a.m. by a man named “David White” who told her he worked for “Public Clearing House” and she was selected in a random drawing for a grand prize. The prize was $300,000.00 and a new car. “Mr. White” told the victim she just needed to provide $495.00 into an account to process the transfer. The victim transferred the money into an account at Bank of America under the name “Wayne Burey”. Two days later, “Mr. White” called the victim and said she needed to provide $1,000.00 to close the processing fee. The victim felt she was being lied to and questioned “Mr. White”. She refused to provide any more money and contacted the Bank of America.
IRS Scam
It’s that time of year when the “IRS Scam” is in full force. We have been receiving calls from people advising they have received phone calls/messages from callers claiming to be from the IRS. The caller advises that the person has not paid the proper taxes and to avoid arrest, the person must pay immediately by purchasing a money card and giving the “agent” the codes on the cards. The IRS will NOT call you. If you know you owe taxes or think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040. If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes, please report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General at 1-800-366-4484. You may also report a phone scam at the Treasury department’s site, https://www.treasury.gov and click on “services” and then again on “report fraud, waste and abuse.”

Nextdoor.com
This is a free private social network for you, your neighbors and your community which allows you to talk to your neighbors on line. This, in turn, People use Nextdoor for many reasons: to quickly get the word out about crimes in the area, organize a Neighborhood Watch Group, track down a trustworthy babysitter, find referrals for businesses, looking for lost pets, finding new homes for unwanted items (furniture, bicycles, etc.), and many other reasons. It is very easy to sign up, and I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access to a neighborhood if they don’t actually live there. There is a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your email. Give it a try! www.nextdoor.com
