Crime Alert and Community Update Bulletin

When I mention “the unit block” of a street, this means the incident occurred at an address anywhere between 1 and 99 of the street.

Notable Cases

On Tuesday, 03-15-16 at approximately 3:53 p.m., officers were dispatched to the Victoria’s Secret store on a report of four subjects who fled into a silver Hyundai Sonata after shoplifting items from the store. The store employees provided a description of the subjects and the vehicle, and Officer Bryce Lickness stopped the vehicle at Callan Boulevard and Southgate Avenue. Three subjects between the ages of 21 and 30 and from the Sacramento area were arrested for burglary and conspiracy to commit a crime.

On Tuesday, 03-15-16 at 7:18 p.m., Officer Nick McCarthy stopped a vehicle at the intersection of Callan Boulevard and Serramonte Boulevard. The vehicle had dealership paper plates, and the officer checked the VIN and found it to have expired registration since 2003 and was registered to a dismantling company in Ohio. The driver stated he didn’t have any identification and that he didn’t own the vehicle. Officer McCarthy said the subject appeared nervous and kept placing his hand on his pants pocket. When the subject gave the officer his name, he provided two different names and dates of birth. After receiving consent to search the vehicle, the officer found a small baggie of methamphetamine and a fraudulent driver's license in the center console. The subject, a 30-year old Daly City resident, was arrested for being in possession of a controlled substance, giving a false name to a police officer and for possessing fraudulent identification.

On Wednesday, 03-16-16 at 5:42 p.m., officers attempted to stop a vehicle on the 100 block of Third Avenue, and the driver of the vehicle refused to yield. A short chase ensued, and the subject stopped on the 100 block of San Pedro Road and got out of his vehicle and began running. Officers chased the suspect, a 31-year old Brisbane resident. The suspect was arrested for felony evasion, resisting arrest, possession of narcotics paraphernalia and driving with a suspended driver's license. The suspect told the officers he ran because he thought the vehicle may have been stolen. His passenger, a 34-year old San Francisco resident, was released.

On Wednesday, 03-16-16 at 11:44 p.m., officers were dispatched to the area of Crocker Avenue and South Hill Boulevard on a report of a male and female disturbance. At the same time, an anonymous reporting party called 9-1-1 to report hearing two gunshots within the area. Officers found two intoxicated male subjects in the bushes, and they said they were involved in a verbal domestic dispute. The 21-year old subjects from Broadmoor and San Francisco were arrested for public intoxication. Officers could not find any evidence of gun shots.

On Saturday, 03-19-16 at 4:23 p.m., officers were dispatched to 87th Street and Edgeworth Street on a report of a mail thief in custody. A Broadmoor P.D. officer reported he contacted a subject after a witness saw the subject attempt to discard mail under his truck. It was determined that some of the mail thefts had occurred in the town of Broadmoor and the City of Daly City. The detained subject, a 49-year old San Francisco resident, admitted to taking mail from people’s mail boxes and looking for anything of value. The subject was arrested for possession of identification of more than 10 persons, mail theft and for a parole violation.

Scams/Other

It’s that time of year when the “IRS Scam” is in full force. We have been receiving calls from people advising they have received phone calls/messages from callers claiming to be from the IRS. The caller advises that the person has not paid the proper taxes and to avoid arrest, the person must pay immediately by purchasing a money card and giving the “agent” the codes on the cards. The IRS will NOT call you. If you know you owe taxes or think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040. If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes, please report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General at 1-800-366-4484. You may also report a phone scam at the Treasury department’s site, https://www.treasury.gov and click on “services” and then again on “report fraud, waste and abuse.”

Nextdoor.com

This is a free private social network for you, your neighbors and your community which allows you to talk to your neighbors on line. This, in turn, People use Nextdoor for many reasons: to quickly get the word out about crimes in the area, organize a Neighborhood Watch Group, track down a trustworthy babysitter, find referrals for businesses, looking for lost pets, finding new homes for unwanted items (furniture, bicycles, etc.), and many other reasons. It is very easy to sign up, and I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access to a neighborhood if they don’t actually live there. There is a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your email. Give it a try! www.nextdoor.com
