Causes of Death for Howard County Deputy Carl Koontz and Suspect are Released; Investigation Continues

Indianapolis & Kokomo, IN - Today the Marion County Coroner and Howard County Coroner offices provided preliminary autopsy information for the cause and manner of death of Howard County Deputy Carl Koontz and the suspect, Evan Dorsey.

The Marion County Coroner’s Office preliminary autopsy report has determined Deputy Carl Koontz died the result of a single gunshot wound to the pelvis.  Homicide is the manner of death.

The Howard County Coroner’s Office preliminary autopsy report has determined the cause of death of the suspect, Evan Dorsey, was a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

The Howard County Sheriff’s Department and the Indiana State Police, as well as police agencies across Indiana are greatly appreciative of the outpouring of support for Deputy Koontz’s family.

To our friends in the media and public, we understand there are many questions related to the tragic loss of Deputy Koontz’s life.  Many of the questions being asked by media are the same questions we are working to answer as the investigation continues.  As is standard policy with Indiana State Police investigations, we will not be commenting on specific points of progress.  Once the investigation is completed, it will be submitted to the local prosecuting authority for review.  Homicide investigations are, by nature, very fluid with information that has to be checked and verified as the investigation moves forward.

Part of this in-depth investigation will be the finalized autopsy reports for Deputy Koontz and suspect Evan Dorsey.  Typically, final autopsy reports take several weeks to complete.

No further investigative information is available until the investigation is completed.
