Crime Alert and Community Update Bulletin

When I mention “the unit block” of a street, this means the incident occurred at an address anywhere between 1 and 99 of the street.

Notable Cases

On Monday, 03-07-16 at approximately 8:20 p.m., officers responded to a residence on the 300 block of San Diego Avenue regarding an interrupted residential burglary. The victim was sitting in his house when he heard a noise, and he knew he was the only one home. He went out to check out the noise and saw that his garage door, which he left partially open, was now closed. He saw subject, described as a black male wearing a black jacket, white hat and pants, nearby who started running from the area.

On Tuesday, 03-08-16 at 7:47 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 600 block of Sylvan Street on a report of three subjects in the back alley of the building trying to get into the reporting party’s apartment by prying open a window. The officers found three subjects in the alley and Officer Bruce Perdomo, with his K-9 partner, ordered the subjects to the ground. The officers searched the subjects and found a firearm lying on the ground, approximately 15 feet from them. The suspects were subsequently arrested. Two subjects, a 16-year old San Francisco resident and a 19-year old San Francisco resident, were arrested for attempted residential burglary and for conspiracy to commit a crime. The third suspect, an 18-year old Daly City resident, was arrested for attempted residential burglary, conspiracy to commit a crime, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, possession of an unregistered firearm and for providing false information to a police officer.

On Wednesday, 03-09-16 at 8:21 p.m., officers were dispatched to the area of Northgate Avenue and Eastgate Drive on a report of gun shots fired at the reporting party’s vehicle. As officers arrived, they saw the reporting party exit his vehicle and walk towards them. The reporting party said when he was driving, an unknown vehicle with multiple unknown occupants pulled up next to him and fired various gun shots at his vehicle. He said the same thing happened a few weeks ago in Modesto. A witness who was parked nearby said she did not hear any gun fire. Officers noticed the subject was jittery and sweating profusely. The officers determined the subject, a 47-year old San Mateo resident, was under the influence of a controlled substance and was arrested for being under the influence, possession of unlawful paraphernalia (a pipe) and for possession of a controlled substance.

On Thursday, 03-10-16 at 9:50 p.m., officers were dispatched to the area of Jefferson High School on a report of a possible kidnapping that occurred approximately 15 minutes prior. Dispatchers advised that the reporting party, who primarily spoke Portuguese, said he was kidnapped three blocks away from Jefferson High School and was shoved into the trunk of his vehicle by two black male adults, one of whom brandished a gun to his face. The victim described his vehicle and said he was having difficulty breathing. At approximately 10:06 p.m., Officer Nick McCarthy located the vehicle in the area of Guadalupe Canyon and Radio Road and said he could hear a male subject screaming from the inside of the trunk. Officer McCarthy opened the trunk and found the subject in a fetal position. The 21-year old victim was checked by fire medical personnel and suffered no physical injuries. The victim said he delivers pizzas, and he was delivering a pizza when he said a subject described as a black male with a muscular build walked out of an apartment on the 7800 block of Mission Street to obtain the order. He said he got back into his vehicle to drive away and realized he was being followed by another vehicle. The victim said the other vehicle then got in front of him and angled it and blocked his path. The victim said the subject (passenger) got out of his vehicle, grabbed a black semi-auto handgun from his waistband and pointed it to his window and told him to put his hands up and to get out of the car. The victim said the driver of the vehicle got out and tried to open the door. The victim said the first suspect took the keys out of the ignition, shoved the victim into his trunk, got back into his vehicle and drove away. The victim said the car eventually stopped, and the subject exited the vehicle. The victim described the first suspect as a black male, approximately 20-25 years old, 5’9”-5’10”, slender build, medium skin, short black hair, both ears pierced with circular diamond-like studs, with a greenish color tattoo possibly of an Arabic-style font running vertically down the right rear side of his neck. He could only describe the second suspect as a black male, approximately 20-25 years old with dark skin and an afro. This case has been assigned to investigators.

On Saturday, 03-12-16 around 4:40 p.m., Officer Karen Douglas was on patrol and noticed a jacket with a “POLICE” patch hanging in the rear window of a pickup truck parked in the Dollar Tree parking lot. Officer Douglas saw a subject wearing civilian clothing exit the vehicle. Officer Douglas and Officer Patrick Dolan looked at the vehicle and saw it was in a state of disarray and decided to contact the subject to see if he was an off-duty officer. The subject told officers he used to be a police officer in Texas. The officers determined the subject, a 52-year old Alameda resident, was never a police officer. During a search of the vehicle, officers located two grenades inside of a tactical nylon vest. The San Mateo County Bomb Squad and took possession of the grenades. He was subsequently arrested for possession of two hand grenades, impersonating a police officer and for possession of a controlled substance.

The suspect ran out of the store with bags. Officers located the suspect near the Panda Express restaurant and placed the subject, a 44-year old San Francisco resident, under arrest for commercial burglary, robbery and brandishing.

On Monday, 03-07-16 at approximately 6:06 p.m., a 48-year old Brisbane resident said she was at the Provident Credit Union ATM on Junipero Serra Boulevard intending to withdraw cash. The victim said she inserted her card into the machine and was about to enter the PIN when she heard a male voice from behind yell in an aggressive manner, “Give me your money!” The victim turned around and saw a subject who was advancing towards her. The victim said she yelled back and became fearful of the subject. The subject repeated his demand, and the victim said a couple of seconds passed before the suspect said, “Just kidding, but seriously give me your money.” The victim said she told the subject “no”, and that the subject said, “okay” and walked past her southbound on Junipero Serra Boulevard. Scams/Other

It’s that time of year when the “IRS Scam” is in full force. We have been receiving calls from people advising they have received phone calls/messages from callers claiming to be from the IRS. The caller advises that the person has not paid the proper taxes and to avoid arrest, the person must pay immediately by purchasing a money card and giving the “agent” the codes on the cards. The IRS will NOT call you. If you know you owe taxes or think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040. If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes, please report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General at 1-800-366-4484. You may also report a phone scam at the Treasury department’s site, https://www.treasury.gov and click on “services” and then again on “report fraud, waste and abuse.”

Nextdoor.com

This is a free private social network for you, your neighbors and your community which allows you to talk to your neighbors on line. This, in turn, People use Nextdoor for many reasons: to quickly get the word out about crimes in the area, organize a Neighborhood Watch Group, track down a trustworthy babysitter, find referrals for businesses, looking for lost pets, finding new homes for unwanted items (furniture, bicycles, etc.), and many other reasons. It is very easy to sign up, and I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access to a neighborhood if they don’t actually live there. There is a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your email. Give it a try! www.nextdoor.com
