Please see the message below from the City of Newport Beach:
Newport Beach City Manager Dave Kiff has selected Jon Lewis to serve as the new chief of police for the Newport Beach Police Department (NBPD). Lewis is currently the NBPD’s deputy chief of police and commander of its Patrol / Traffic Division.
“I have great faith that Jon’s top-notch leadership skills, integrity, vision and law enforcement experience are an excellent fit for the NBPD and for our community,” Kiff said. “During his police career here, Jon has shown a strong engagement with our community on critical issues, all for the betterment of Newport Beach. I’m proud of the work Jon has accomplished for Newport Beach and am very pleased to promote him to the top job in our police department.”
Lewis joined the NBPD 25 years ago, initially working part-time as he earned his undergraduate degree. He became a full-time police officer in 1996 and, over the years, promoted through the ranks until being appointed deputy chief in 2014. He served in progressively responsible capacities in each of the NBPD’s divisions including patrol, detectives and support services.
“I’ve been privileged to spend my professional career in Newport Beach and am grateful for the many opportunities and relationships that have developed over the years,” Lewis said. “This is an outstanding community and I’m incredibly honored to serve as its chief of police.”
Lewis earned a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from the California State University, Long Beach and a Master of Arts in Criminal Justice from Chapman University. He is an adjunct faculty member for the Golden West College Criminal Justice Training Center, serves on the Criminal Justice Advisory Group for California Southern University, and is a member of the Golden West College Leadership and Ethics Institute Steering Committee.
In addition, Lewis is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce’s Commodores Club, and is currently the chairman of the Board of Directors for Leadership Tomorrow, a local, civic leadership development organization.
He will take over direction of the police department from Police Chief Jay Johnson. Johnson retired in December 2015, but agreed to remain as the City’s acting chief of police while it recruited a new police chief.
Lewis and his wife Darcy have two children. They reside in Orange County.
