GPD Traffic Bureau Receives Prestigious 2016 POALAC Centurion Award

From Chief Robert Castro:

I am proud to announce that the Glendale Police Department Traffic Bureau has been selected to receive the highly prestigious 2016 POALAC Centurion Award for Excellence in Traffic Enforcement.

Our selection was based upon a multi-faceted, prevention-based, traffic safety plan that was developed by our Department in 2015 to combat a rise in pedestrian, traffic-related fatalities.

Our staff worked with City Engineering to improve the engineering and design of streets, sidewalks, crosswalks and signals. Parking Enforcement Officer Armen Garabedian conducted numerous presentations in English and Armenian to educate the senior citizens of our Community on the importance of making eye contact with drivers before stepping onto the road.

To date, Armen has made these presentations to approximately 1300 of our senior citizens. These presentations, along with an educational video titled, “Look to Live – A Senior Pedestrian Safety Public Safety Announcement,” subsequently led to a drop in senior pedestrian fatalities from five (5) in 2014 to one (1) in 2015. The enforcement portion of this plan yielded approximately 16,000 citations for moving violations in 2015 and significant drops in pedestrian and traffic collisions.

I congratulate the Traffic Bureau on receiving this prestigious award and applaud their great strides in making Glendale’s streets safer for pedestrians and drivers alike.
