PRESS RELEASE FOR THE WEEK OF
February 29 – March 6, 2016

Any charges reported in this press release are merely accusations and the Defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

03/03

Suspicious Person: A caller reported a man with a clipboard was walking behind their home. They yelled out to him but he didn’t respond. Officers made contact with a person matching the description. It was a Copper Valley Electric employee who was reading meters.

Possible Intoxicated Driver: A local business reported a possible intoxicated driver who had just left their establishment heading outbound on the Richardson Hwy. Officers were unable to locate a vehicle matching the description.

Transport - Other: While on patrol, an officer noticed a young child walking down Hazelet by herself. When he stopped to talk to her she said she was “walking home”. The officer was able to make contact with the child’s parents and brought the child to them.

Suspicious Person: An officer made contact with an individual in the parking lot of the hospital during a routine security check. The subject had been drinking and reported a firework had blown up in his hand and his friend dropped him off to seek medical treatment. The officer assisted the individual into the hospital.

Welfare Check: A concerned caller reported an individual had left Valdez to go snow machining at Thompson Pass the day before and had been unable to get a hold of them. An officer was able to make contact with a related party who stated the individual was fine and that they went to the pass to go riding again.

Arrested: Lamont Edrick Washington, DOB: 05/29/1965, of Valdez, was arrested on a bench warrant for failure to appear. Original charge was DUI.

Traffic Complaint: A caller reported a 4-runner was driving up on the snow bank on W. Egan going towards the Betty Cato Bridge. Officers made contact with the vehicle and issued the driver a warning.

Agency Assist: A single vehicle rollover with no injuries was reported at MP 50 of the Richardson Hwy. Valdez Dispatch contacted Matcom for response from AST.

Disturbance: A caller reported that her boyfriend who wouldn’t leave her apartment upon her request and he was “freaking out”. Officers provided transportation and had the parties separated for the night.

Agency Assist: VPD assisted the Valdez Fire Department for a reported fire alarm.

MVA: Officers responded to a single vehicle rollover at MP 16 of the Richardson Hwy.

Disturbance – Other: A caller reported hearing a chainsaw up on the Dock Point Trail. Officers were unable to locate anyone operating a chainsaw.

Lost Property: A caller reported losing a backpack or suspected it possibly was stolen from their vehicle at a local business. A citizen found the backpack in the middle of the highway on their way home from Thompson Pass and turned it in to the Valdez Police Department.

Information: An anonymous caller reported a party with a bunch of juveniles at a residence in Robe River. Officers went to the residence and made contact with 5 juveniles who were just hanging out and no signs of alcohol.

Suspicious Vehicle: A caller reported a dark colored suburban outside their residence. Two men were walking up the driveway. When they noticed the resident was outside, they immediately left the area. An officer was unable to locate a vehicle of that description.

Ski Trail Misc: A caller reported a van was stuck in the snow approximately 150 yards down the non-motorized ski trail on Homestead. An officer responded and made contact with the driver who stated they were “going down a road they’ve never been down and wanted to see where it went to and got stuck”. The driver was issued a citation for driving a motorized vehicle on a human powered only Valdez ski trail.

Traffic Hazard: The stop sign at Meals & Egan was knocked down. An employee from the city shop retrieved the stop sign.

Await Trial: Christopher Levi Harnden, DOB 08/04/1986, was transported to the Valdez jail to await trial on pending assault charges.

Open Door: A cabin door on a vessel at the Small Boat Harbor was open. An officer contacted the owner who checked out the vessel and confirmed everything was ok.
