Crime Alert and Community Update Bulletin

When I mention “the unit block” of a street, this means the incident occurred at an address anywhere between 1 and 99 of the street.

Notable Cases

On Monday, 02-22-16 at approximately 12:08 a.m., officers were dispatched to an apartment on the unit block of Escuela Drive on a report of a domestic disturbance in which the husband kicked the wife in the back. The reporting party said the wife told him her husband possibly had a firearm, but the reporting party didn’t see it. The reporting party said the victim called him crying and asked him to pick her up. The reporting party was driving the victim to the hospital as she had been kicked and was limping. The reporting party said he noticed a vehicle following him and realized it was the victim’s husband. When they got to Seton Medical Center, the reporting party said the husband pulled over and blocked his vehicle in front of his. The husband then grabbed the victim by her arm and pulled her out of the vehicle and put her into his vehicle and drove out of the parking lot. Officers went to the residence, and they saw a male walking with a female who was walking with a limp. The 43-year old suspect was arrested for kidnapping, criminal threats, corporal injury on a spouse, child cruelty with the possibility of death, carrying a loaded firearm in a public place, carrying a firearm in a vehicle, brandishing a firearm and restricting a person for calling for help. The 40-year old victim was granted an emergency protective order.

On Wednesday, 02-24-16 at 2:15 a.m., Officer Bonnie Shiu was on patrol near A Street and El Camino Real and saw a subject looking around the rear passenger seats of a parked vehicle. The officer asked the subject if it was his vehicle, and he said it wasn’t. The officer called the registered owner who said he did not give the subject permission to be inside his vehicle. Officer Shiu asked the subject if he had anything illegal on his person, and he said he didn’t. The subject consented to being searched, and the officer found a driver's license not belonging to him, as well as various access/credit cards not belonging to him. The subject, a 44-year old transient, was arrested for attempted auto burglary and for being in possession of identifying information not belonging to him.

On Thursday, 02-25-16 at 3:20 a.m., officers were dispatched to a residence on the unit block of Westline Drive on the report of a possible structure fire. The fire department cleared the residence and found an illegal marijuana grow inside of the residence. The 40-year old resident was arrested for cultivation of marijuana, possession of marijuana for sales and theft of utility services. The San Mateo County Narcotics Task Force took over the investigation.
On Saturday, 02-27-16 at 5:10 p.m., Officer Patrick Dolan was patrolling the area of the Wilshire walkway located on the border of San Francisco and Daly City. He contacted a subject who said he lived under the overpass with his girlfriend. The officer asked the 38-year old subject if all of the items in the immediate area were his, and the subject said he found most of the items in the dumpster. Officer Dolan walked around the subject’s campsite and found two fairly new bicycles covered by a tarp. The subject advised his “friend” dropped off the bikes but admitted that he knew they were stolen from the Park Merced apartments. The officer also located a credit card not belonging to the subject. The subject did not have an explanation for the credit card, but said he finds lots of things in the trash. Officer Dolan also found a pipe used to smoke methamphetamine. The subject was cited for misappropriation of lost/stolen goods and for possession of narcotics paraphernalia.

On Saturday, 02-27-16 at 7:17 p.m., officers were dispatched to the area of Los Olivos Avenue and Santa Barbara Avenue on a report of a suspicious circumstance. The reporting party said an unknown subject approached his vehicle as he was parking it, told him he needed help and tried to open the passenger door. The reporting party became scared and drove off. The reporting party gave a description of the subject, and as officers were looking for the subject in the area, they were advised by dispatchers of another report of a subject trying to get into someone’s vehicle. The officers found the subject, a 22-year old Union City resident, at Mission Street and Vista Grande Avenue. The subject admitted to using methamphetamine and smoking marijuana earlier in the day. The subject was cited for being under the influence.

The reporting party said she ignored it at first but then looked through the peep hole in the door and didn’t see anything. The victim said she then called her husband and believes after the suspect heard her voice, the suspect fled. Scams/Other

It’s that time of year when the “IRS Scam” is in full force. We have been receiving calls from people advising they have received phone calls/messages from callers claiming to be from the IRS. The caller advises that the person has not paid the proper taxes and to avoid arrest, the person must pay immediately by purchasing a money card and giving the “agent” the codes on the cards. The IRS will NOT call you. If you know you owe taxes or think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040. If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes, please report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General at 1-800-366-484. You may also report a phone scam at the Treasury department’s site, https://www.treasury.gov and click on “services” and then again on “report fraud, waste and abuse.”

Nextdoor.com

This is a free private social network for you, your neighbors and your community which allows you to talk to your neighbors on line. This, in turn, People use Nextdoor for many reasons: to quickly get the word out about crimes in the area, organize a Neighborhood Watch Group, track down a trustworthy babysitter, find referrals for businesses, looking for lost pets, finding new homes for unwanted items (furniture, bicycles, etc.), and many other reasons. It is very easy to sign up, and I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access to a neighborhood if they don’t actually live there. There is a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your email. Give it a try! www.nextdoor.com
