Sheriff Jim McDonnell Attends ‪#TeamKids‬ Challenge Carnival in Compton to Celebrate Student Acts of Service That Benefit Others and the Community

Sheriff Jim McDonnell joined deputies from Compton Sheriff's Station, Sheriff's Youth Foundation, Compton School Police Officers, Compton School District officials and other community leaders to celebrate the accomplishments of several students at the Clinton Elementary School. The students took on the “Team Kids Challenge” in completing acts of service and kindness that benefit others and the community. Earlier in the year, Compton Sheriff’s Station partnered with “Team Kids” (www.teamkids.org) and the Compton School District to do something special for their community – service projects to benefit others through the Team Kids Challenge Program. Students at Clinton Elementary School took on “The Challenge” and for the past month completed three different service projects which included authoring hundreds of Valentine’s Day cards for American Service-Members overseas for Operation Gratitude; Collecting 1000 gently used blankets and towels for local animal shelters and the SPCA-LA; and putting together handmade bookmarks for Speak Out Against Bullying Incorporated.

On Friday, February 26, 2016, the Compton Sheriff’s Station, Team Kids, Clinton Elementary School and all those involved capped off their service campaign with a large carnival celebration held at the school. Seventy-five, 6th through 8th grade, students joined the Team Kids Leadership and Team Kids Coaches in planning the low-to-no-cost fundraising carnival which included 18 carnival game booths and activities. Nearly 1,000 students were in attendance. The carnival itself served as yet another act of service by the kids, as money raised from ticket sales will be graciously donated to Children's Hospital Los Angeles. Sheriff Jim McDonnell stated, “There is nothing better than seeing children helping other children with selfless acts of kindness and community support. It’s a good sign for our communities when our kids are getting involved with acts of compassion and service,” added McDonnell. One of the Sheriff’s key areas of focus is youth development and education.
About Team Kids

“Team Kids” is a non-profit organization that nurtures and empowers youth to become leaders in their community. Working along with emergency first responders in the community, such as the LASD, Team Kids forms a team with the youth to build their confidence in knowing they can change the world. During the month-long community service event, the student leadership committee meets once a week with “Team Kids” coaches, a deputy sheriff and a school police officer to plan for the weekly service project. Each week the students, school-wide, participate in a service project.
