*5th UPD* Investigation Continues into Murder of Baby Autumn – Suspect Released Pending Further Investigation
Ray Howard Patterson, 23, was arrested on Monday, February 22, 2016, based on leads developed during the ongoing homicide investigation regarding the murder of one‑year‑old baby Autumn Johnson in the city of Compton. The arrest was based on probable cause to believe he was involved in her murder.
Today, February 24, 2016, Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau detectives presented the case to the District Attorney’s Office for their consideration of filing criminal charges. The District Attorney’s Office asked for further investigation from the Sheriff’s Department. As a result, the arrestee is being released from custody. The extensive homicide investigation is continuing, which includes identifying all principals and accessories involved.
Detectives believe there are community members who can help solve this tragic, senseless murder of a baby. The Sheriff’s Department is asking anyone with information about the suspect(s) or the events before, during or after the murder, to provide that information and aid our efforts to bring justice to Autumn and her family.

On Tuesday, February 9, 2016 at approximately 6:58 p.m., one-year-old baby Autumn Johnson was shot inside her home in the 300 block of North Holly Avenue in the city of Compton. Responding deputies, in an attempt at saving her life, rushed baby Autumn to the hospital in their patrol car but she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital. The suspects in the shooting death fled the scene and were outstanding.
Subsequently a $75,000 reward was offered by the City of Compton, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Sheriff’s Homicide investigators along with Compton Sheriff’s Station Operation Safe Streets gang investigators assumed the investigation. During their investigation they received information as to the identity of the suspect responsible for the murder.
On Monday, February 22, 2016 at approximately 2:30 p.m., detectives from the Compton Station Operation Safe Streets – Gang Unit located the suspect in the area of Bullis Road and Rosecrans Avenue in the city of Compton. Ray Howard Patterson, 23, was arrested for the murder of baby Autumn.
Suspect Patterson was booked at Century Regional Detention Facility and is being held without bail. Suspect Patterson is scheduled to appear at Los Angeles Superior Compton Courthouse on Wednesday, February 24, 2016 for arraignment.
Investigators continue their investigation into the murder for additional evidence and suspects.

Homicide detectives are continuing their investigation into the shooting death of 1 year-old Autumn Johnson that occurred on Tuesday, February 9, 2016, at her home in the 300 block of North Holly Avenue, Compton.
Compton Mayor Aja Brown and the City Council, together with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, Mark Ridley-Thomas, are each offering a $25,000 reward. The latest efforts bring the total reward to $75,000 for information leading to the identification, apprehension and conviction of any person or persons responsible for the death of Baby Johnson.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD), County of Los Angeles Board of Supervisors, and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) work collaboratively on many crime reduction and enforcement efforts in the city of Compton. The LASD is among a collection of local and federal agencies supporting substantial efforts to reduce crime and violence in our communities through the Violence Reduction Network (VRN). The Violence Reduction Network is a Department of Justice (DOJ) initiative being carried out in select cities in the United States, including the city of Compton. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide detectives are seeking the public’s assistance in locating two male blacks who were seen fleeing the scene of a shooting that left Autumn Johnson, a one year-old baby, dead in Compton.
The suspects fled south on Holly Avenue in a blue, newer model, four-door Chevrolet Impala, over a motive detectives describe as “gang related.”
On Tuesday, February 9, 2016, at approximately 6:58 p.m., baby Autumn Johnson was shot inside her home on the 300 block of North Holly Avenue in Compton. Responding Compton Station deputies, in a desperate attempt to save her life, rushed baby Autumn in their patrol car to a hospital. Although life-saving measures were performed by medical staff, baby Autumn succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is seeking the public’s assistance for any information leading to the location of the suspects’ vehicle and/or apprehension of the two male black suspects seen fleeing the scene. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau detectives responded to the 300 block of North Holly Avenue, Compton, to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting death of a one year old female on Tuesday, February 9, 2016 at approximately 7:00 p.m.
When homicide detectives arrived, they learned that Compton Sheriff’s Station deputies responded to the location regarding a “Gunshot victim” call. Upon their arrival, they found the victim, a female Black infant, suffering from a gunshot wound to her head. Paramedics hadn’t arrived yet so deputies decided to take the child and drove her to a local hospital in their patrol car. Doctors worked on the victim, but she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead.
Witnesses have described the suspects as two male blacks in a dark colored 4 door sedan.
The shooting appears to be gang related.
The investigation is still ongoing.
