Teton Sheriff's Office warns public of ongoing "US Marshal" phone scam. See email/link for details.
MESSAGE RELAYED ON BEHALF OF THE TETON COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE
The Teton County Sheriff's Office would like to warn the public of an ongoing telephone scam occurring in Teton County. The Sheriff's Office Investigations and Dispatch have received multiple calls from citizens today stating they have been targeted by this scam. It can be expected that these calls will continue, as they are very difficult to track down.
The scam generally involves someone calling and identifying themselves as being with the U.S. Marshal's office. They then claim that you have missed a court date and unless you wire money to them a warrant will be issued for your arrest. The U.S. Marshal's office, or any other law enforcement agency, will never ask for money to be wired to them to clear a warrant.
Teton County Sheriff's Office advises citizens to ignore these calls and to not wire any money to people they do not know over the telephone. There is no need to report these calls to law enforcement unless you have suffered a loss as a result of the scam phone call. If you have suffered a loss, you can call Sheriff's Office Dispatch at 307-733-2331. If you receive a call and are unsure if it is valid, you can call Sheriff's Office Investigations at 307-733-4052.
