On 02-10-2016, at approximately 11:36 pm, officers from the Chula Vista Police Department responded to a call of a vehicle theft that just occurred from the parking lot of 699 E Street (Days Inn). The reporting party stated that an unknown suspect just stole her friends 2009 Black Nissan Maxima; with her 18 month old baby boy still inside the car in his car seat. The mother and a friend had pulled up to the hotel’s main office to check in and when they exited the vehicle and walked into the office; the unknown suspect jumped into the vehicle and drove off. The stolen vehicle information was aired to surrounding law enforcement agencies.

On 02-11-2016, at about 12:10 am, officers from the National City Police Department responded to a call of a baby found in the Black Nissan Maxima in the 500 block of K Avenue. The toddler was found inside the vehicle still secured in his car seat and unharmed. The suspect who later admitted to stealing the vehicle called police when he noticed the sleeping toddler in the back seat. The child was reunited with his mother.

The suspect Steve Luna (25 yrs old) of Chula Vista and was booked into County Jail on the charges of being under the influence of a controlled substance and auto theft.
