Checked your RV Lately? ‘Trailer Break-ins’ Reported
The last few weeks, several victims have come forward saying that their RV’s, which were parked at storage facilities in Santa Clarita, were targeted by thieves.
"It appears these suspects have keyed in on RV’s because they feel that they will go unnoticed because of the large area that the trailers are stored in,” said Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Burglary Team Sergeant Chris Maurizi.
Even though the trailers are locked, the thieves have been gaining entry by breaking the locks and window.
“They are looking for anything of value that they can turn around and sell quickly,” Maurizi said.
In one recent case, there was a firearm reported stolen from a motorhome.
Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station urges the public not to leave valuables in their stored RV. Valuables can include cash, jewelry and electronics.
In addition to items of monetary value, it is also important to remove any personal information so as to avoid being a victim of identity theft. Remove any paperwork that may include your full name, date of birth, address or social security number.
Check on your RV regularly. Stop by the storage facility periodically, even if there is a security system in place. Go inside and inspect your vehicle for missing items, and inspect the outside, for signs of forced entry.
If you are a victim of theft or vandalism, contact the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.
If the stolen property is valued at less than $950, or the vandalism damage is valued under $400, you also have the option of reporting the crime online by visiting the LASD.org website and selecting the link ‘File an Online Police Report.’
Anyone with information on the break-ins is asked to contact the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station at (661) 255-1121.
Tips can also be submitted anonymously online through LACrimeStoppers.org. You can also submit an anonymous tip by phone at 1-800-222-8477, or submit a tip by text by texting “TIPLA” plus your message to CRIMES (274637).
