Utility Company Phone Scam and Citizen's Police Academy
The Frankfort Police Department was made aware of an on-going telephone scam circulating in the area. In this particular scam, an unknown caller claiming to be from a utility company calls a business or resident and advises that they are behind on a utility payment. The caller will make it appear that the payment is urgent and may claim that utilities will be turned off. At times, the scam involves the offender “spoofing” the caller id. Basically, for a very small fee you can “spoof” a caller id, which allows the caller to make any phone number come up on caller id. At times the victim’s phone number shows up on their own caller id, a utility company, or even that a government agency’s phone number shows up on caller id. Lately, this has been a way for scam artists to make their phone call seem credible. In recent cases the phone number on the caller id was (844)277-9448. Please remember that if a government agency, utility company, or anyone calls you asking for personal information or payment you should not give out any of this information over the phone. Call them back using a listed number on-line or in a phone book. If someone asks you to make a payment using a “Green Dot MoneyPak Card”or money gram, it is most likely a scam. Lastly, you can always put your phone number on the do not call list. If you are having a particular problem with a certain business soliciting after you fill out the do not call registration form, you can go on the Illinois Attorney General’s website and fill out at Do Not Call Complaint form.
