On January 13, 2016 at approximately 11:50 am, an Assistant Principal at Rodriguez High School was dealing with a disruptive and defiant juvenile student on campus and called for the assistance of the police officer assigned to the campus. When the officer arrived, he learned that the adult brother of the original student, who is also a Rodriguez High School student, had become involved and had threatened to beat up the Assistant Principal. The adult was identified as Robert Smith, an 18 year-old Fairfield resident. The officer intervened to calm the situation and escorted Smith to the school office so the officer could complete an investigation into the threats. Smith threatened to beat up the officer several times while walking to the office, and would not follow directions.
Once in the school office, Smith tried to escape by pushing past the officer. The officer pushed Smith back to prevent his escape which caused Smith to fall down. Smith quickly stood back up as if he intended to fight the officer. The officer was able to subdue Smith with his Taser and was able to safely place him under arrest.
The juvenile, whose name is being withheld due to his age, was also arrested for resisting, obstructing, and delaying an officer in the performance if his/her duties.
Robert Smith was examined at Northbay Medical Center and booked into Solano County Jail for the following crimes;
· Threatening a Peace Officer
· Threatening School Staff
· Resisting, obstructing, and delaying an officer in the performance if his/her duties
The Fairfield Police Department and the Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District have a strong and highly valued partnership to keep students and staff safe on campus. That partnership includes assigning officers at the city's high school campuses and a middle school campus. The role of Police Officers at our schools is to maintain a safe learning environment, to mentor and develop positive relationships with youth in our community, and to be a resource to help young people grow into responsible and productive adults.
