Part-time Community Service Officer

City of Lockport

$17.00 per hour

The City of Lockport has two positions available for part-time Community Service Officers assigned to the Police Department. The Community Service Officers perform a variety of routine and complex tasks relating to the interpretation of adopted codes, rules and regulations to achieve compliance and mitigate problems. The successful candidate must possess the following minimum qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent, be able to read and write the English language, ability to obtain CPR and LEADS certification, the possession of a valid Illinois driver’s license, and be of good moral character.

Community Service Officers perform the following duties:

  • Provides assistance at accident and fire scenes; assesses severity of incident and requests back-up including police, fire, ambulance/paramedic and tow trucks; provides traffic and crowd control; transports citizens home.
  • Provide funeral escorts for safety purposes.
  • Identifies road hazards and malfunctioning utilities; contacts Public Works to ensure public safety; deploys barricades and stop signs as needed.
  • Assists patrol officers with booking prisoners; including searches, fingerprints, photographs, computer data entry, inventory of personal items and picking up meals; monitors the well-being of juveniles under arrest; cares for children whose parent is in custody.
  • Collects and inventories evidence related to crimes.
  • Testifies in court as required.
  • Provides assistance to citizens in a variety of circumstances; assists stranded motorists; requests tow trucks or obtains gas; attempts to gain entry to locked vehicles; assists citizens when locked out of home; provides assistance to citizens with downed electrical wires.
  • Provides assistance regarding traffic and parking enforcement; deploys department decoy car and speed trailer; collects daily commuter parking fees and enforces parking restrictions; patrols and enforces state and village parking restrictions; issues citations for violations.
  • Verifies vehicle ID numbers for titles; identifies hazardous and abandoned vehicles and has them removed.
  • Provides assistance regarding animal control; responds to and takes reports of dog bites, requests medics if needed; confines dog and files paperwork with the County; assists residents with barking dogs, stray pets, injured/dead animals, etc.
  • Investigate animal abuse/neglect situations. Take appropriate action – discuss proper care or file charges.
  • Work the front desk as needed.

Starting hourly rate is $17.00.

This position will work an average of 20 hours a week with holidays off without pay. Hours will be determined by the needs of the department but will generally fall during regular business hours.
