Woman Found By #LASD SAR After Being Lost Overnight Near Ski Resort In Wrightwood

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Search and Rescue Team have located a woman who was reported missing from a local ski resort in Wrightwood on Sunday, January 10, 2016.

A Phelan, California (San Bernardino County) resident called Palmdale Station to report his 51 year-old mother missing from a local Ski Resort.  The circumstances of how she became lost are still unclear, but it appears she may have gone to the resort to look for someone.  One of the last text messages her son received from her was that she was walking in the snow without shoes, she was lost, and needed help getting back to her car. The son then drove to the resort and found his mother’s vehicle parked in the lot, but he could not locate her.

Palmdale Sheriff’s Station dispatched three units to the location.  Upon their arrival at the resort, they met with the son and located the car.  They also discovered tracks in the snow leading away from her vehicle.  The Antelope Valley Search and Rescue Team (SAR) was activated.  Several team members who were very familiar with the resort and the surrounding area arrived on scene at approximately 5:00 AM. Additional SAR members arrived over the next few hours.

Ground searchers found leads, such as the victim’s car keys, a sock, and tracks in the snow, but these did not lead to the victim.

A Search via air was not possible due to the inclement weather.  With the approval from the California Office of Emergency Management, search personnel received help from the United States Air Force in the form of sophisticated cell phone tracking technology. They determined the victim’s cell phone was last active in the Table Mountain Campground area. Search team members then focused on that area and located the victim near the amphitheater.

The victim was conscious and coherent.

Search personnel initiated a Mutual Aid request for a “snow cat” from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department to assist with extracting the victim from the area.

Further information on the victim’s condition is not known at this time.
