Ceres CA- An officer-involved shooting occurred yesterday evening near El Camino and Don Pedro in Ceres. No officers were injured, and an unidentified male suffered fatal injuries.

On Tuesday, January 5, 2016 at about 09:48 PM, two Ceres Police officers were on foot patrol in the small apartment complex located at 2601 Don Pedro Rd. The officers were in the area due to prior illegal drug activity. A preliminary investigation revealed when the officers arrived they encountered a male who was inside the complex. The male ran from the officers and the officers gave chase. Preliminary investigation revealed when the male was running away, he was retrieving an item from his waist area. The two Ceres police officers discharged their firearms striking the man. Officers on scene rendered medical aid to the male but unfortunately the male was pronounced deceased on scene.

The unidentified man was transported to the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office where a medical examination will be conducted and his identity will be confirmed. No information about the identity of the male will be released by the Ceres Police Department. All inquiries about the male’s identity can be directed to the Stanislaus County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office.

Investigators from the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office are conducting a parallel investigation alongside the Ceres Police Department, as is standard in any officer-involved shooting. An internal investigation is also being conducted by our Professional Standards and Conduct Unit. The two officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave which is standard for any officer-involved shooting.

This is an ongoing investigation and no other details will be released at this time. If there is anyone who may have information regarding the incident is encouraged to contact Detective Bryan Ferreira at 209-538-5616 or Detective Sergeant Danny Vierra at 209-538-5672.
