RPDPS Investigations Unit is requesting assistance in compiling a list of locations with surveillance videos

In an effort to better serve the community, the Investigations Bureau of the Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety has compiled a list of locations with surveillance video. This could be at a place of business or a personal residence. Our goal is to keep a current and comprehensive list of locations that maintains surveillance video, with a contact person, so in an event that a crime occurs at a specific location or in a certain area we can quickly look up who has video and who to contact.

Surveillance video is one of the most effective tools for solving and deterring crime. Numerous crimes have been solved in our city due to businesses having surveillance cameras both inside and outside of their business. Residences that have surveillance cameras are just as beneficial. Through the assistance of our residents who have installed video surveillance on their homes we have been able to solve and get convictions on crimes that occurred around those residences. Some examples of crimes that we were able to solve thanks to residential cameras were; the assault of a female college student jogging on the creek path behind a home with surveillance cameras, a subject who was assaulted by three others with a baseball bat next door to a home with surveillance cameras, and subjects who were stealing packages off of the porches of homes including one with surveillance cameras. These are just a few of the examples of how partnering with those who live in our city who have installed and maintained video surveillance cameras on their residences have helped us to solve crimes that have occurred in Rohnert Park.

If you have not already done so, please take a moment to call the Investigations Bureau at (707) 584-2630, or send an email to [email protected] with the following information if you have a surveillance video system at your residence or business:

Location (address) 

Person of contact 

Phone number of person 

In the event that your video is on a loop, please provide us the amount of time you keep the video stored before it is recorded over.

The better relationships we have with our local businesses, and the more we partner with the residents of our city in order to make surveillance video more accessible, the more effective we can be in enhancing the safety of our businesses and residential areas. The website www.Safewise.com named Rohnert Park one of the 50 safest college towns in America for 2015, and one of the reasons they cited for including Rohnert Park on this list was, to quote, “One city program in particular—Rohnert Park on Watch—compiles locations in the town with surveillance video in order to better solve crimes and facilitate collaboration between community members and the local police”. We want to continue and build upon this program, and we are looking for the community’s assistance in doing so. On behalf of the Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety’s Investigation Bureau, we thank you for your cooperation and support in our continued efforts to make Rohnert Park the safest city on the 101 corridor.
