Crime Alert and Community Update Bulletin

When I mention “the unit block” of a street, this means the incident occurred at an address anywhere between 1 and 99 of the street.

Notable Cases

On Monday, 11-30-15 at 6:57 p.m., Officer Michael Nuovo and Officer Garrett Larsen were dispatched to an apartment on the 300 block of Peoria Street on a report of a suspicious circumstance. The 36-year old reporting party said she thought her “on and off again” boyfriend who had recently returned from prison broke into her residence, and she was fearful he was still inside the apartment. Officers found the reporting party’s 53-year old boyfriend inside the apartment. Because the subject was on parole, the officers searched the apartment and found drug paraphernalia. The officers determined the subject was under the influence of a controlled substance and arrested him for that, as well as being in possession of drug paraphernalia.

On Tuesday, 12-01-15 at 4:29 p.m., Officer Korey Sprader stopped a subject in a vehicle playing loud music in the area of Hickey Boulevard and Campus Drive. The driver said his license was suspended. The officer asked the driver if he had ever been arrested, and the subject said he had been for a DUI and for battery. The officer also found out the driver was also arrested for a narcotics charge and asked if the subject had any narcotics or weapons on him. Officer Sprader asked the subject if he could search him, and the subject agreed. The officer found a black folding knife (switchblade) concealed within his pants. The subject, a 44-year old Daly City resident, was cited for possession of a switchblade knife and for driving with a suspended license.

Last week I reported about 34-year old shoplifter at Target who left her 11-year old daughter behind after being confronted by loss prevention officers. After receiving a tip, on Thursday 12-03-15, officers found the suspect in Oakland, along with her boyfriend and sister in a stolen car containing a firearm and ammunition. The suspect was arrested for child cruelty, being a felon in possession of a firearm, being a felon in possession of ammunition, possession of a stolen vehicle, and for three felony warrants. The boyfriend, a 34-year old Pacifica resident, was arrested for a felony warrant, being a felon in possession of a firearm, being a felon in possession of ammunition, accessory, and for resisting arrest. The suspect’s sister, a 27-year old Oakland resident, was arrested for possession of a stolen vehicle.
On Thursday, 12-03-15 at 9:36 p.m. two males were involved in a physical altercation following a soccer match. This occurred in the gymnasium at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on Brunswick Street in Daly City. The victim, a 44-year old Daly City resident, said he was intentionally struck by a driver in a vehicle as he was walking along the parking lot. The victim sustained a laceration on his head and received several stitches. A suspect has been identified, and this investigation is continuing.

On Friday, 12-04-15 at 5:57 p.m., officers were dispatched to the Bank of America ATM at the Serramonte Shopping Center on a report of two “shoulder surfing” suspects who were detained by mall security. An alert citizen reported seeing two suspicious males outside the ATM. The security officer witnessed the “shoulder surfing” and detained the suspects. For those of you who aren’t aware, “shoulder surfing” is when a subject watches a customer enter the PIN information, complete the transaction and walk away from the ATM without logging off or completely ending the transaction. That subject then immediately walks over to the ATM, re-enters the PIN and withdraws money. (This is only with Bank of America ATM’s.) Both suspects, a 23-year old Fairfield resident and a 20-year old Daly City resident, were arrested for unauthorized use of identification and for conspiracy.

On Sunday, 12-06-15 at 12:11 a.m., officers were dispatched to Serramonte Shopping Center near JC Penney on a report of a Hispanic female wearing a red jacket who was looking into vehicles. Officers arrived and found the subject who appeared to be under the influence of a stimulant. When asked what she was doing in the parking lot, the subject said she was looking for her friends who brought her there. The subject, a 17-year old San Francisco resident, was arrested for being under the influence of a controlled substance and was released to her mother.

On Sunday, 12-06-15 at 9:59 a.m., Officer Jeff Morgan was dispatched to the 400 block of St. Francis Boulevard to assist a police assistant who was in the process of towing a vehicle. The police assistant said he was towing the vehicle for expired registration, and the tow truck driver was on the scene. The police assistant said the owner arrived on scene via another vehicle and started running and yelling at him. The police assistant said he was getting back into his vehicle when the subject, a 45-year old San Francisco resident, slammed the door shut to prevent the police assistant from entering his vehicle. At that point, the tow truck driver exited the truck and tried to intervene, which then resulted in a physical encounter between the tow truck driver and subject. The police assistant then tried to assist the tow truck driver by pulling the subject away from him. The driver of the vehicle who dropped off the subject grabbed the police assistant by the neck and tried to pull him away from her friend. The subject was arrested for arrested for obstructing/resisting an executive officer in the performance of his duties, conspiracy, and battery. The subject’s friend, a 36-year old Daly City resident, was arrested for conspiracy and obstructing/resisting an executive officer in the performance of his duties.

Scams/Other

Mail Scam

To our knowledge, this hasn’t happened in Daly City, but this information was posted by the San Francisco Police Department, and I thought I would share it with you. In this scam, the victim received a priority mail envelope with a letter inside via the U.S. Postal Service. The letter read that the recipient had been selected as a “mystery shopper” and gave instructions on how the program works. Also inside the envelope was a check in the amount of several thousand dollars. The instructions asked the recipient to deposit the money into his/her bank account and deduct $200 for completing the assignment. It then stated to wire the balance via Western Union and use $90 for transfer fees. In this scam, the recipient deposits the check into the account, and then the fraudulent check will not clear due to insufficient funds. The recipient is then responsible for the amount of the check and loses the amount of money transferred.

If you have received such a notice/letter, you are asked to call us and report the incident, or call the U.S. Postal Service Inspectors at 1-877-876-2455. Do not cash the check.

Community Events

Operation Santa Claus

Operation Santa Claus is celebrating its 66th year of distributing food and toys in the Daly City/Colma/Broadmoor area. Please donate new, unwrapped toys at the Fire Administration office at 10 Wembley Drive through Friday, December 11. Volunteer drivers are also needed to deliver toys on Monday December 14. Drivers are asked to check in at Fire Station 94 at 444 Gellert Boulevard (At Wembley Drive) on December 14 no later than 6:15 p.m. Vehicles will be loaded promptly at 7:00 p.m.

In today’s unpredictable economic times, the definition of families needing holiday assistance includes a new category of the “working poor”—people who are a part of the labor force but earn less than a subsistence level of income. It is the goal of “Operation Santa Claus” to assist these families, as well as our struggling senior citizens, with a warm meal and holiday cheer. Eligible families are screened by the Daly City Community Services Center.

The program is entirely volunteer-driven, and 100% of all monies donated go directly into the program. The community is encouraged to make monetary donations (tax deductible check payable to “Operation Santa Claus”) and to donate new children’s toys. For more information, contact the Community Services Center located at 350 90th Street at (650) 991-8007 or the North County Fire Authority, located at 444 Gellert Boulevard at (650) 991-8138.

The City appreciates the dedicated support and kind assistance of individuals, businesses, and service organizations that continue to help make “Operation Santa Claus” successful year after year.

Daly City Public Library Offers Food for Fines Program for Patrons

The Daly City Public Library is participating in the 2015 Food for Fines Program from November 16 through December 31, 2015. Under this program, patrons can “pay off” their accrued fines for overdue library materials by making a donation of non-perishable food items.

The Daly City Public Library has partnered with Second Harvest Food Bank, San Mateo County Library, Redwood City Library, San Mateo Public Library and South San Francisco Public Library to offer this simple amnesty program to allow patrons to “pay off” library fines by donating food to those in need. Patrons can give to the community and get their library record back in good standing at the same time.

Combined efforts last year resulted in a collection of 35,252 pounds of food and 5,475 library accounts cleared. Second Harvest Food Bank estimated that 25 pounds of food will feed one family for a week. Food is provided free of charge to 326 local non-profit agencies at more than 700 sites, including pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and after-school programs.

Monetary donations can be made directly by visiting Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties at www.shfb.org.

Nextdoor.com

This is a free private social network for you, your neighbors and your community which allows you to talk to your neighbors on line. This, in turn, People use Nextdoor for many reasons: to quickly get the word out about crimes in the area, organize a Neighborhood Watch Group, track down a trustworthy babysitter, find referrals for businesses, looking for lost pets, finding new homes for unwanted items (furniture, bicycles, etc.), and many other reasons. It is very easy to sign up, and I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access to a neighborhood if they don’t actually live there. There is a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your email. Give it a try! www.nextdoor.com
