Crime Alert and Community Update Bulletin

When I mention “the unit block” of a street, this means the incident occurred at an address anywhere between 1 and 99 of the street.

Notable Cases

On Tuesday, 11-17-15 at 3:10 p.m., three teenage girls were the victims of an indecent exposure by an unknown male while they were walking on the unit block of Alpine Avenue. The suspect was described as a White or Hispanic male in his late 20’s or early 30’s with short hair and was wearing a white short sleeved shirt and gray sweat pants. This investigation is continuing.

On Friday, 11-20-15 at 1:57 a.m., Officer Christian Poteat contacted a subject who was seated on the bus bench near the corner of Mission Street and Evergreen Avenue. The officer said the subject appeared to be young and was possibly violating curfew hours. The subject gave the officer a false name, and the officer found identification and credit cards not belonging to him in his possession. The subject, a 25-year old Daly City resident, was arrested for identity theft and resisting/obstructing or delaying a peace officer.

On Friday, 11-20-15 at 7:44 a.m., Officer Janet Cordellos was on patrol in the area of East Market Street and Third Avenue and saw a subject seated with his head down in the driver’s of a parked pick-up truck. The occupant of the truck did not have his license or identification with him and told the officer he was not on probation or parole. Our dispatchers advised the officer the subject, a 35-year old San Francisco resident, was on probation for transportation/sale/ distribution of narcotics and for possession of hypodermic needles. One of the conditions of the subject’s probation was “search and seizure.” The officer asked the subject if he had anything illegal on him, and he said he had a little bit of methamphetamine in his pants pocket, as well as a glass pipe and a needle. The subject was arrested for possession of a controlled substance (heroin and hydrocodone tablets), possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of hypodermic needles.

On Saturday, 11-21-15 at 10:35 p.m., a neighbor at Parkwood Drive and Fairway Drive reported hearing a female screaming and saw a male grabbing the female. Both subjects were intoxicated and were transported to the Daly City police station. The male subject, a 31-year old Daly City resident, resisted the officer’s attempts to be placed in handcuffs. His probation officer was contacted, and he placed a “probation hold” on him. The female subject, a 21-year old South San Francisco resident, was arrested for public intoxication. The male subject was arrested for battery on a spouse, resisting arrest, and public intoxication.

Scams/Other

Leather Jacket Scam

This hasn’t happened lately in Daly City, but I thought I’d mention it. Last week, a shopper was approached by an individual asking for directions in the in the Safeway parking lot in Campbell. The conversation took a turn when the individual started talking about working for the Italian designer, Emporio Armani. He then presented the shopper with a business card and said he was returning to Italy but didn’t want to pay taxes on several expensive leather jackets he still had. The shopper felt uneasy and didn’t take the individual up on his offer. In this scam that has happened in other areas of the U.S., the person offers the victim an incredible deal on jackets and will go so far as to follow the victim to an ATM to get cash in exchange for the luxury merchandise. Later the victim finds out that the items are not even real leather. The suspect in Campbell P.D.’s case is described as a white male in his mid-30’s, 5’8”, with short light colored hair. He is described as being very personable and spoke with a thick Italian accent. This suspect was seen driving a new model 4-door black Jeep. Please do not accept any offers from people selling items in parking lots. The deals are too good to be true.

Daly City Public Library Offers Food for Fines Program for Patrons

The Daly City Public Library is participating in the 2015 Food for Fines Program from November 16 through December 31, 2015. Under this program, patrons can “pay off” their accrued fines for overdue library materials by making a donation of non-perishable food items.

The Daly City Public Library has partnered with Second Harvest Food Bank, San Mateo County Library, Redwood City Library, San Mateo Public Library and South San Francisco Public Library to offer this simple amnesty program to allow patrons to “pay off” library fines by donating food to those in need. Patrons can give to the community and get their library record back in good standing at the same time.

Combined efforts last year resulted in a collection of 35,252 pounds of food and 5,475 library accounts cleared. Second Harvest Food Bank estimated that 25 pounds of food will feed one family for a week. Food is provided free of charge to 326 local non-profit agencies at more than 700 sites, including pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and after-school programs.

Monetary donations can be made directly by visiting Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties at www.shfb.org.

Nextdoor.com

This is a free private social network for you, your neighbors and your community which allows you to talk to your neighbors on line. This, in turn, People use Nextdoor for many reasons: to quickly get the word out about crimes in the area, organize a Neighborhood Watch Group, track down a trustworthy babysitter, find referrals for businesses, looking for lost pets, finding new homes for unwanted items (furniture, bicycles, etc.), and many other reasons. It is very easy to sign up, and I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access to a neighborhood if they don’t actually live there. There is a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your email. Give it a try! www.nextdoor.com
