Narrative:
A month-long investigation into several suspicious fires that occurred in the Calleguas Creek river bottom near Mission Oaks Boulevard and the surrounding industrial areas led to the arrests of Juan Elvington and Christian Byrd for arson.
During the month of October, 2015, members of the Ventura County Fire Department and Ventura County Sheriff’s Arson Unit responded to several suspicious fires in the Calleguas Creek river bottom near Mission Oaks Boulevard, and in the adjacent industrial area in Camarillo. As a result of their combined investigation, arson investigators from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office and Ventura County Fire Department determined the fires were the result of an arsonist.
Members of the Camarillo Special Enforcement Detail and Camarillo Detective Bureau began assisting in the investigation. Christian Byrd and Juan Elvington were identified as possible suspects in the arsons. On 11-05-15, the detectives and arson investigators served search warrants at Elvington’s and Byrd’s homes in the city of Camarillo. Additional evidence was discovered that led investigators to arrest both Elvington and Byrd for several arsons that occurred in October.
Investigators suspect additional fires were lit in the industrial areas adjacent to Calleguas Creek between Adolfo Road and Mission Oaks Boulevard during the same time period, but went unreported. Investigators are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying additional unreported arsons.
