Pursuit Suspect Captured In Ripon

On 11-04-15 at approximately midnight, Officers from the California Highway Patrol were involved in a vehicle pursuit that entered the City of Ripon. The suspect reportedly abandoned the vehicle, and fled on foot near the Calvary Reformed Church (741 Second St.) The suspect was seen jumping fences in the neighborhood.

Ripon officers immediately responded to the scene and they diligently searched for the suspect throughout the night. Citizen reports came in during the night, reporting the suspect’s movements.

At approximately 6:30 a.m. officers were searching the area around the Ripon Shell gas station (334 E. Main St.) and they spotted the suspect. When the suspect saw uniformed officers converging toward him, he ran towards the Main Street over cross. Additional officers responded to the scene and the suspect was quickly taken into custody without incident. CHP was notified.

Ripon officers located a bicycle the suspect had reportedly stolen in an attempt to elude capture. The bicycle owner was contacted and he confirmed the theft occurred during the night.

The suspect Lajawn Trumaine Cokley (31) of Merced was booked into the San Joaquin County Jail on charges that included resisting arrest, and theft.

Ripon Police Department spokesperson, Lt. Steve Merchant said, “This was a great example of the cooperation we’ve developed between our citizens and their police department. Invaluable citizen calls to our department providing us with real-time information on the suspect’s movements, combined with the determination of our patrol officers to protect our city, lead to the apprehension of this suspect.” Contact Info:
