Crime Alert and Community Update Bulletin

When I mention “the unit block” of a street, this means the incident occurred at an address anywhere between 1 and 99 of the street.

Notable Cases

On Monday, 10-26-15 at 8:10 p.m., Officer Philip Wagnon and Officer Jaime Bermudez were working in plain clothes driving an unmarked car in the area of Gellert Boulevard and Callan Boulevard, due to the high number of recent residential burglaries. Some of the burglaries occurred when residents were still inside their homes. The officers saw a suspicious male subject walking through a pathway between two houses on the unit block of Norwood Avenue. At the same time, they saw a dark colored Acura Integra parked with the engine running and a subject sitting in the passenger seat. Officer Wagnon went after the first subject, and Officer Bermudez attempted to talk to the subject in the passenger seat. That subject then jumped into the driver’s seat and drove away—which resulted in a pursuit. The pursuit was terminated due to unsafe conditions. Officers arrested the first subject, a 24-year old Daly City resident, for attempted burglary, trespassing, prowling, possession of a burglary tool and vandalism. The case is still under investigation to identify the other subject.

On Wednesday, 10-28-15 at 2:33 p.m., Officer Jose Ortega conducted a traffic stop in the area of Geneva Avenue and Santos Street. The subject, a 41-year old Oakland resident, was on probation with a search and seizure clause. Officers found marijuana and a can of tear gas in the glove compartment. The subject had a medical marijuana card, but because he was a felon, he could not possess tear gas. He was arrested for being in possession of a tear gas weapon with a prior felony conviction.

On Thursday, 10-29-15 at 11:04 a.m., officers were dispatched to the Edgemont Street entrance of City Hall on a report of a suspicious person who appeared to be sleeping near a retaining wall/planter box. The subject had a backpack, suitcase and shopping bag next to him. Officers woke up the subject, a 24-year old transient, who said he was just resting before he met with someone at the Police Department to pick up his knife that was taken from him a month ago. Officers asked the subject if he had any knives on his person, and he said yes. The officer removed a sharp serrated kitchen knife from the subject’s pants pocket. (It should be noted this wasn’t the knife he was trying to retrieve.) The knife was booked for safekeeping, and the subject received a citation for possession of a dirk or dagger.

On Friday, 10-30-15 at 3:20 a.m., Officer Philip Wagnon conducted a traffic stop on the 400 block of John Daly Boulevard. Three subjects were in the vehicle, and the driver, a 38-year old San Francisco resident, had a suspended driver's license. Officer Wagnon asked the subject if he had anything illegal on his person, and he said he had a gun and a pipe in the jacket he was wearing. The subject also admitted to having methamphetamine in his possession. The suspect was subsequently arrested for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition by a prohibited person, possession of a controlled substance while armed, carrying a concealed loaded unregistered firearm, possession of a controlled substance for sales, carrying a loaded firearm in a public place, possession of a switchblade/butterfly knife, possession of unlawful paraphernalia and for driving with a suspended license.

On Saturday, 10-31-15 at 12:01 a.m., officers attempted to conduct a probation search at a residence on the 200 block of Frankfort Street of a subject they had stopped. The subject, a 55-year old Daly City resident, gave officers permission to search his room. The officers were met at the front door by the subject’s 27-year old niece who wouldn’t allow the officers to enter the residence. The subject started screaming and slamming the door on the officer’s foot. She was subsequently arrested for obstructing/delaying/resisting a police investigation.

On Saturday, 10-31-15 at 2:27 a.m., officers were dispatched to the area of Skyline Boulevard and Westmoor Avenue on a report of a possible intoxicated driver. The reporting party, a tow truck driver, said he saw the vehicle operating with only three inflated tires. The reporting party continued to give updates and said he saw the suspect pull into the Fairmont Shopping Center and stumble out of his vehicle. Officers contacted the subject in the parking lot and noted he had an unsteady gait, and they smelled an odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his person. There was moderate but significant damage to the front driver’s side bumper, the driver’s side quarter panel was missing, and the front driver’s side tire was completely off of the rim. The passenger compartment area had the airbags deployed. The driver, a 37-year old Carmichael resident, said he “hit a guard rail or something” coming up Highway 1 in Pacifica. Officers conducted field sobriety tests to determine the subject’s sobriety. After arresting the subject for driving under influence, officers processed the subject’s vehicle prior to being towed. They located a firearm that was in a backpack on the floorboard of the passenger seat. The subject was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence with a blood alcohol content over .08% and for carrying a concealed firearm from within a vehicle.

On Saturday, 10-31-15 at 10:52 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 400 block of Talbert Street to investigate a report of an unknown subject who started a fire in a trash can. The Daly City Fire Department was already on scene and extinguished the fire.

Nextdoor.com

This is a free private social network for you, your neighbors and your community which allows you to talk to your neighbors on line. This, in turn, People use Nextdoor for many reasons: to quickly get the word out about crimes in the area, organize a Neighborhood Watch Group, track down a trustworthy babysitter, find referrals for businesses, looking for lost pets, finding new homes for unwanted items (furniture, bicycles, etc.), and many other reasons. It is very easy to sign up, and I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access to a neighborhood if they don’t actually live there. There is a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your email. Give it a try! www.nextdoor.com
