On October 19, 2015 at approximately 9:33 PM, officers were dispatched to 5601 Amarillo Blvd West on what was originally dispatched as a vehicle vs. pedestrian collision.  Upon their arrival they learned the incident occurred at Thompson Park.  They learned that a HF 17 of Amarillo was driving a 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer in approximately the 100 block of west Horseshoe Lane.  A HM juvenile was riding on the roof of the car. The owner of the car, a BF 17 was riding on the hood of the car.  Another WM juvenile was riding on the trunk of the car.  A WF juvenile was the front right passenger in the car.  The driver applied the brakes and the HM 16 that was riding on the roof was thrown from the car.  He received a head injury when he hit the ground.  The other riders on the car were not injured.  The victim was being taken to the hospital by private car but was met by an ambulance sent to meet them.  The injured victim was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.  On 10-22-15 (corrected date), the victim Johnny Joe Lozano, HM 16 died of injuries sustained in the incident.  Justice of the Peace Gary Jackson ordered an autopsy.  This incident is being investigated by the Traffic Investigation Squad as this is considered a traffic fatality.  No charges have been filed at this point in the investigation.  There is no indication that alcohol was a factor in this incident.
