Gilroy Police Department Press Release UPDATE - Murder, 187 PC and 664-187 PC, Attempted Murder (Stabbing)

UPDATE:

The Gilroy Police Department was notified that the 83 year old victim in this case, identified as Margarita Subia, has died as a result of the injuries sustained in this attack.

Margarita Subia was the grandmother of suspect, Stephen Subia. This investigation is ongoing and investigators are still trying to determine the motive behind Stephen’s attack on his family members.

Stephen's booking charges have been amended to 1 count of Murder, 187 PC for the death of his grandmother and 1 count of Attempted Murder, 664-187 PC for the assault on his aunt, who is recovering from injuries she sustained in this attack.

Details:

On 10/05/2016 at about 1811 hours Gilroy Police and Fire units were dispatched to a residence in the 8400 Block of Wayland Lane in the City of Gilroy regarding an unknown type disturbance. A 911 call was made to the Gilroy Communications center and the call taker could hear a woman screaming. The call taker was able to obtain information that someone in the residence was bleeding. The caller eventually reported that someone in the residence had been beaten.

Police officers arrived on scene within a few minutes of the call and found an 83 year old and a 60 year old woman, both suffering from numerous stab wounds to their head, face and extremities.

Emergency medical personnel arrived and provided emergency medical aid and prepared the victims for transport to the hospital. Both victims were flown to a local trauma center with severe injuries as a result of the assault. Both victims underwent emergency surgery in an effort to stabilize their critical conditions. At the time of this release the 83 year old victim is still in critical condition with life threatening injuries. The 60 year old victim is listed in serious but stable condition.

Through their investigation Gilroy Officers and Detectives were able to identify 20 year old Stephen Gause-Subia as the suspect in the stabbing. The investigation also revealed that Gause-Subia is the grandson of the older victim and the nephew of the other victim.

Gause-Subia fled the area prior to police arrival. Gilroy Police Detectives responded to assume the investigation and numerous patrol officers were called in to assist in the search for Gause-Subia.

At approximately 2019 hours, Gause-Subia was located walking on Murray Ave. in Gilroy. He was contacted and taken into custody without incident. He was transported to the Gilroy Police Department for further investigation. Gause-Subia was ultimately transported to and lodged in the Santa Clara County Jail on two (2) counts of attempted murder.

Although an arrest was made in this case, the investigation is active and on-going. At this time the motive for Gause-Subia’s attack of his grandmother and aunt is unknown.
