Rancho Cucamonga - Fatal Traffic Collision

DATE/TIME: October 18, 2015, at approximately 1146 hours

INCIDENT: Fatal Traffic Collision

LOCATION: 11200 Block of 4th Street in Rancho Cucamonga

PARTY #1: 31 year old female adult from Montclair (Victim’s Mother)

PARTY #2: 3 month old baby girl from Montclair (Deceased)

SUMMARY:
On Sunday, October 18, 2015, at about 11:46 a.m., the victim’s family was at a local fast food restaurant for lunch. The victim’s father had gone inside the restaurant to place an order while the mother, was securing their vehicle and getting the kids out.

A preliminary investigation has revealed the family was using a borrowed vehicle. Party #1 was unfamiliar with the operation of the vehicle. She believed she had turned it off and was in the process of unloading her infant daughter and 3 year old son.

After removing the infant from her car seat, Party #1 realized the vehicle was still running. Party #1 walked around to the driver’s side door still holding her baby daughter. Party #1 reached in to turn off the vehicle and somehow the vehicle began rolling backwards. Party #1 tried to apply the brakes and in the process lost hold of her daughter.

The baby fell and was struck as the vehicle rolled backwards. Party #1 was able to stop the vehicle and then rush to her daughter. The baby was subsequently transported via ambulance to the San Antonio Community Hospital in Upland where she was pronounced deceased. Party #1 was uninjured. Although extremely upset, she was cooperative with investigators and was released from the scene.

Members of the Rancho Cucamonga Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) are investigating the collision. At this time, it is not believed alcohol or improper driving were contributing factors. Anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who might have additional information pertinent to the case is encouraged to contact investigators at the numbers listed below.
