UPDATE: Chula Vista Police Investigating Fatal Shooting

On 10/17/2015 at 8:30pm The Chula Vista Police Departments Crimes of Violence Unit arrested and booked Melissa Hayes-Spencer (30) for homicide. CVPD is not releasing the name of the victim at this time.


The Chula Vista Police Department’s Crimes of Violence Unit is investigating a fatal shooting incident that occurred this morning in the apartment complex at 1310 Santa Rita. Today, on 10/17/15, at 0847 hours Chula Vista Police received a 911 call from a woman who said she had just shot her boyfriend and needed medical assistance. The woman said that her boyfriend was hitting her and she shot him. Police responded and arrived within minutes. They found a 30-year-old male on the floor of the bedroom with a single gunshot wound to the chest. The 30 year-old woman who called police was there with the victim rendering aid. Police and paramedics attempted to revive the victim without success. He was declared dead at 16 minutes after 9:00. The woman had an injury to her hand. She was treated on scene by paramedics. She was cooperative with police at the scene and voluntarily came to the Chula Vista Police Department. Investigators plan to question with the woman to get more details about what occurred. The female identified herself at the scene as a Customs and Border Patrol Protection Officer(CBP). Chula Vista Police has confirmed that the woman is a CBP Officer and is coordinating with investigators from CBP and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Office of Professional Responsibility. Crimes of Violence Detectives are working to obtain a search warrant for the residence and checking for witnesses to today’s incident and any other past incidents or disturbances involving the couple. Police are also looking into whether there has been any other reported or unreported incidents of domestic violence between the two. A handgun was found in the bedroom. It and other evidence will be seized during the service of the warrant. There were no other people in the apartment where the two have lived for just over a month. There was one dog in the apartment that has been turned over to family. CVPD is not releasing the names of either party at this time. The San Diego District Attorney’s Office is coordinating with detectives on the investigation.
