Most of the roads impacted by yesterday’s storm in the Antelope Valley will reopen at 8:00PM on Friday, October 16, 2015.

 

Los Angeles County Unified command said the roads will reopen to residents only with Identification. 

 

Residents are asked to have the photo identification readily available to provide to law enforcement.  LASD deputies and CHP officers will be standing by at the below listed roadways to verify residency and escort residents through the affected areas.  The roads will remain open subject to roadway and weather conditions.

 

The re-openings are for the following:

1.            Elizabeth Lake Road at the intersection with Godde Hill Road to San Francisquito Canyon Road,

2.            Bouquet Canyon Road from Spunky Camyon Road to Elizabeth Lake Road.

3.            San Francisquito Road from Spunky Canyon road to Elizabeth Lake Road.

4.            Elizabeth Lake Road from Johnson Road to Lake Hughes Road.

 

The following road closures remain in effect

1.   Munz Ranch Road from Elizabeth Lake Road to Lancaster Road

2.   Lake Hughes Road from Dry Gulch Road to Elizabeth Lake Road

3.   Elizabeth Lake Road at the intersection with Godde Hill Road to City Ranch Road.  

 

Residents are advised to park their vehicles on their properties to keep the roadway clear for emergency responders as well as County work crews. Vehicles parked on the roadway in the path of emergency responders and work crews are subject to tow.

West Lake Incident Update: LASD, LACOFire, LACo Public Works unified command

 

On Thursday, October 15, 2015, a severe storm with flash floods caused road closures and damage to many private homes and businesses in the Antelope Valley, particularly the Lake Hughes community. 

 

The NWS has issued a flash flood warning in effect Friday afternoon and early evening across the mountains of the southwest California and Antelope Valley (For more information please visit http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/).

 

Los Angeles County Fire Personnel have gone to door to door in the affected areas and assessed 756 homes during their welfare checks.  The Occupants have been accounted for and are safe.  Members from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Search and Rescue teams are staging to assist.

 

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Works is currently working to remove the estimated 300,000 cu/yards of mud and debris that has been deposited throughout the Antelope Valley.  Building and Safety inspectors are on scene to inspect damaged buildings for occupancy. A range of heavy equipment are currently moving the mud and debris from major roadways to allow the road crew to inspect for damage.  This is done to ensure the roadway hasn’t been washed away and to allow for safe for travel.  The Department of Public Works, in conjunction with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and California Highway Patrol are enforcing the following road closures.

Elizabeth Lake Road at Lake Hughes Road

Elizabeth Lake  Road at Johnson Road

Munz Ranch Road at Lancaster Road

San Francisquito Road at City Highline road

 

Due to the possibility that roads have been washed away, and to ensure full access to work crews for road clearance and safety inspections, people who live in within the road closures are asked to shelter in place—if you leave your home, you will not be allowed back in.

Pets, Live Stock and Animal Information:

Los Angeles County Animal Care and Control recommends that small animals be taken inside during the storms.   They are also able to house animals from the affected area. Coordination for large animal sheltering will be made if necessary.  The Public Information Line is: 661 257-3191.

 

Safety Tips

 

·        Turn Around – Don’t Drown:

o   Do not drive or attempt to cross into flooded areas. Make your safety a priority. 

o   Major roads will be cleared first to allow emergency vehicle access into the area - please be patient with road clearance crews and emergency vehicles.

o   Stay away from flood control channels, catch basins, canyons and natural waterways

o   If you see someone who has been swept into moving water, Immediately call 911

o   If you become isolated, seek the highest ground available and wait for help.

o   Do not step into moving water around your car.

·        Stay Informed – Monitor Weather

o   If your cell phone coverage is limited, listen to your local AM radio stations for emergency information 

·        Electrical Safety - Never attempt to move or go near a downed power line

o   Call 911 to report downed power lines.

o   Be aware of traffic dangers due to weather, watch for traffic signals that may be out. Approach those intersections as four-way stops.  

o   Know how to shut off all utilities. Remember, water and electricity do not mix.

·        Step Towards Recovery

o   Start to document your damaged property and report it on the County’s website.
