Advisory

New Oklahoma Gun Licensing Laws Go Into Effect Soon

As of November 1st, misdemeanor drug convictions will no longer be a permanent barrier for Oklahoma residents wanting to legally carry a gun. Historically, misdemeanor convictions relating to illegal drug use or possession, including possession of drug paraphernalia, permanently precluded a person from getting a gun license. November 1, 2015, the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation will be able to issue licenses to those with prior misdemeanor drug convictions so long as the sentence was completed more than 10 years ago. In addition, applicants wanting to pay their processing fee with a nationally recognized credit card or through electronic funds transfer must use OSBI’s online application portal. A link to the SDA online application portal, forms, law books and answers to questions concerning Oklahoma’s gun licensing laws and process can be found at www.ok.gov/osbi/Handgun_Licensing.
