With the common goal to be water-wise and maintain our trees healthy during the drought, the City of Santa Ana offers the following educational information to assist residents in this effort.
A common indicator of tree stress due to lack of water to root systems is wilting leaves. A few simple steps can make a difference!
Small and Newly Planted Trees
• Young trees need easier access to water to establish deep root systems.
• Watering with a hose or bucket once or twice a week with about 5 gallons of water will make the difference in the survival of young trees.
• Add four to six inches of mulch to lower soil temperatures and reduce water evaporation.
• For newly planted trees, fill the watering basin and occasionally buffer the basin with soil.
Large and Mature Trees
• Slowly water the “drip zone” area directly beneath the foliage and shaded area by the tree.
• Water once a week with about 5 gallons of water directly into the soil with a hose or bucket.
• A simple watering of 20 minutes, twice a month can save the mature trees.
• Use a “soaker head” with your hose that drips only the slightest of water.
• Add mulch to lower soil temperatures and reduce water evaporation.
• Consider installing a drip watering system that will soak the root system.
Remember the watering of street trees in front of residences and properties is the responsibility of the adjacent property owner.

Conserve Nuestra Agua y Protega Los Árboles Durante La Sequía
Con el objetivo común del uso eficiente del agua y de mantener nuestros árboles saludables durante la sequía, la Ciudad de Santa Ana le ofrece la siguiente información educativa a residentes para contribuir en este esfuerzo.
Un indicador común de estrés del árbol debido a la falta de agua es hojas marchitas o secas. Algunos pasos sencillos pueden hacer la diferencia.
Árboles Pequeños y Recién Plantados
• Árboles jóvenes necesitan acceso fácil al agua para establecer sistemas de raíces más profundos.
• Riegue árboles jóvenes dos veces a la semana con 5 galones de agua con manguera o balde. Esto hará la diferencia en la sobrevivencia de los árboles.
• Agregue cuatro a seis pulgadas de mantillo para reducir la temperatura de la tierra y la evaporación de agua.
• Para los árboles recién plantados, llene la cuenca de riego y ocasionalmente aplique tierra alrededor de la cuenca.
Árboles Grandes y Maduros
• Irrigue lentamente la “zona de goteo” directamente debajo del follaje y el área que recibe sombra del árbol.
• Riegue arboles maduros con 5 galones de agua una vez por semana con manguera o balde.
• Simplemente regar dos veces al mes por 20 minutos puede ayudar a nuestros árboles maduros a sobrevivir.
• Agregue una regadera con mínimo goteo (soaker head) a la manguera para conservar agua..
• Agregue cuatro a seis pulgadas de mantillo para reducir la temperatura de la tierra y la evaporación de agua.
• Considere la posibilidad de instalar un sistema de riego por goteo que remoje el sistema de raíces.
Recuerde que el riego de los árboles junto a la banqueta que están en frente de residencias y propiedades es la responsabilidad del propietario de esa residencia o propiedad.
