NWS SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT - HAZARDOUS BEACH CONDITIONS THIS HOLIDAY WEEKEND

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PORTLAND OR

242 PM PDT WED OCT 7 2015

...HAZARDOUS BEACH CONDITIONS THIS HOLIDAY WEEKEND...

REMNANTS FROM HURRICANE OHO WILL MOVE NORTH AND REMAIN WELL OFFSHORE THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST COAST THURSDAY NIGHT AND FRIDAY WITH LINGERING EFFECTS THROUGH THE WEEKEND. THE PRIMARY CONCERN WILL BE AN UNUSUALLY HIGH AND LONG PERIOD SOUTHWEST OCEAN SWELL GIVING POTENTIAL TO CREATE BREAKING WAVES OVER JETTIES ALONG WITH SOUTH FACING BEACHES AND HEADS. THE WAVES MAY ALSO RESULT IN BEACH EROSION ACROSS AREAS THAT DON`T COMMONLY SEE IMPACTS FROM WAVE ACTION.

THE DOMINANT SOUTHWEST WAVES WILL GRADUALLY SHIFT TO A SIGNIFICANT WESTERLY SWELL LATER IN THE WEEKEND. THIS WILL ALSO BRING BEACH HAZARDS AS BREAKING WAVES WILL ADVANCE FARTHER UP THE SHORELINE THAN NORMAL.

VISITORS TO THE COAST SHOULD REMAIN OUT OF THE SURF ZONE AND OFF JETTIES THIS WEEKEND. BREAKING WAVES WILL VARY GREATLY IN SIZE AND COULD EASILY SWEEP PEOPLE INTO THE WATER. WAVES HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO ROLL DRIFTWOOD LOGS AND TRAP PEOPLE UNDERNEATH.

ADDITIONALLY...MARINERS WILL LIKELY ENCOUNTER UNUSUAL HAZARDS THIS WEEKEND. PLEASE REFER TO THE MARINE WEATHER STATEMENT /PDXMWSPQR/ FOR ADDITIONAL MARINE HAZARDS.
