Advisory

Theft By Deception - Elderly Victims

Northern District has an important message for the community!

On 09/15/2015, a elderly Glen Burnie woman responded to a knock at her door. She found a man who identified himself as a representative of the Baltimore Gas and Electric Company. He told the victim there was a problem with the pole in the rear of her home and he needed to check her residence for termites. She allowed the man entrance to her home and he went from room to room. At the conclusion he told the victim she owed $50.00 for the service, which was paid.

We see this type of activity on a periodic basis and there are any number of variations. Please be aware of this type of scam and alert elderly relatives and neighbors so they can be prepared. We suggest that elderly residents not allow any stranger into their home.

Generally, if a utility company worker comes to a home it is at the request of the homeowner. Any representative of the Baltimore Gas Electric Company, a telephone company service provider or County utility worker will have proper credentials and gladly display them on demand.
