LASD Sheriff's Youth Activities League takes inner city kids to see the Dodgers play
The Sheriff’s Youth Foundation Youth Activities League (YAL) centers are places kids can go after school to play, do homework or socialize with other local kids in a safe environment. The 17 facilities are staffed by life coaches who are a selected blend of deputies, civilians and untold dozens of volunteers who generously donate their time. They focus on guiding, mentoring and motivating at-risk and economically disadvantaged kids into becoming happy, healthy, well-rounded adults.
Time at the YAL centers fills the interval young boys and girls face during the critical hours after school when they are in the greatest danger of becoming involved in drugs and gangs. The deputies have hours of positive interaction with the kids which allows them to become mentors and role models, thus bridging the gap between the community and law enforcement.
Occasionally, the kids and deputies get to enjoy a field trip together, as was such last week. Through the recent acquisition of sponsorship of the L.A. Dodgers by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, promotion tickets were obtained for watching home games. On Monday, August 31, 2015, YAL deputies from Compton, East Los Angeles and Norwalk Sheriff’s Stations were able to treat 75 of the kids from the centers they staff to an evening at the ballpark with these tickets.
Lieutenant Walid Ashrafnia from Compton Sheriff’s Station, Sergeant Anna Diviak from East Los Angeles Sheriff’s Station and Deputy Susana Rosales from Norwalk Sheriff’s Station escorted the boys and girls to Dodger Stadium to watch the Dodgers play the San Francisco Giants. They indulged in traditional ballgame festivities like the seventh-inning stretch, cheering their favorite players and nibbling on world-famous Dodger Dogs. It was an afternoon to relax in a different environment and indulge in some fun before starting the new school year.
The Dodgers must have known the kids were coming and put on their best show for them…they beat the Giants in a 5 – 4 score.
