Animal Control Announcement
For Immediate Release: August 28, 2015
Today, Cass County Animal Control Director Michael Grice announces that “The agency will stop using the euthanasia machine effective January 1, 2016 or sooner.” He states that “the machine continues to comply with the original standards as set by the HSUS (Humane Society of the United States) and the American Humane Society when they first started using it in 1992.” Though continued use of the machine is still accepted by the American Veterinary Medical Association, the County believes it is time to discontinue its’ use. Grice says, “We have been looking at this issue for a very long time and the time is right to remove the machine.” In 2014, 1195 animals were euthanized in Cass County, but of those, 898 were euthanized by lethal injection, which is 75%.
