(INDIANAPOLIS)— On Friday August 21, 2015, officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) SWAT team assisted IMPD Narcotics detectives in serving a narcotics search warrant in the 10000 block of Baribeau Lane.  As SWAT officers announced their presence at the residence, an individual from inside the residence fired multiple shots from an assault rifle through the walls towards the SWAT officers assembling outside.  The SWAT officers were immediately able to determine the gunfire was being directly at them from a front bedroom, but showed remarkable firearms discipline by not returning gunfire, since they could not see the individual shooting at them.  After the gunfire ended, SWAT officers were able to safely detain 4 individuals from inside of the residence, including the alleged shooter.  One SWAT officer sustained shrapnel wounds to his left cheek as a result of the gunfire directed at him.  The SWAT officer was transported to Methodist Hospital, where he was treated and released.

Detectives from the IMPD Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) are currently investigating today’s incident.  The IMPD CIRT detectives are responsible for investigating criminal incidents involving the actual use or attempted use of deadly force against IMPD officers.  In addition to the original narcotics search warrant, CIRT detectives obtained a second search warrant to recover evidence from today’s shooting.  During the execution of the second search warrant, detectives recovered an assault rifle and suspected narcotics from inside of the residence.  CIRT detectives are currently working to determine what arrest charges are appropriate after today’s shooting incident.  Information about those arrested will be released once the individuals have been processed at the Arrestee Processing Center.  This case remains active, and the Marion County Prosecutor's Office will make the final charging decision after a review of the evidence from today’s incident.
